The news that CR is about to close came as something of a surprise to me, and I imagine some of you feel the same way. I had hoped the moderation experiment would have fixed what ails us, but I accept Frank's decision. I must say, however, that I find the stream of goodbyes and eulogies and suchlike to be quite depressing. And alarming. And unnecessary. We're a *community* at this point. There is no reason whatever that this should change. I am working on launching a new site that should suit us just fine. It will likely be the UBB format with which we are all familiar. It will have many of the features that we enjoy here. It will have a music/piano discussion section (after all, we share a love of music) and an off-topic section for discussion of whatever interests you. You know, the usual: Politics, religion, and of course, lots and lots of Terry Schiavo! It will be a site for adults and young people who act like adults. Mature, yet civil and fun. Everyone is welcome to join, and all points of view are welcome, of course. What it will not have is rudeness, flames, name-calling and trolling. Discussion is fine. Disagreement is fine. Heated discussion is fine. Hot topics are fine. Vile behavior is not fine. The particulars are still being worked out, but we envision a free trial period of at least a few months. It will then become a non-profit subscription-based site, with the annual subscription fee set to cover operating expenses only. It remains to be seen how much this will be, but I'm guessing it would be $10-$15 per year or less. Very manageable. Two of us will pick up the initial expenses to get going, and as I am a Luddite, any tech advice anyone wants to provide will be much appreciated. I have enjoyed my time here at PW very much. You are all an amazing group of people, and I think the world of you. I've learned lots, and I hope I've given a little something back. I really, really hope this turn of events doesn't have to be the end. I'll do what I can to make sure of that. I'll post the address ASAP. I hope I'll see you at this new site. Once I, uh, think of a name for the thing! We already have a mascot, though: Cindy -- thinking Kluurs can find a much better mascot if he sets his mind to it, and posting this with Frank's permission

do we need 4 new places to meet or one?
there are already about 60 people together... not to compete with Frank's board (as this one seems to want to do), but just as a replacement for the CR.

KB - I see your point, but many of us want one that is an improvement on the CR. Cindy's talking about enforcing a behaviour standard. JGOO and Larry have announced that their boards are CR business-as-usual.

Well, with all due respect have you looked at either?
(I know you have.. but i mean in depth).
I think Larry will let virtually anything fly. I think Jgoo is asking that people keep it civil, and I think that comments about ****ing on burning people's guts will not be tolerated.
Cindy's talking about starting up a whole forum to compete with the PW forums. .... not gonna happen. Sorry
jgoo's simply giving us all a place to congregate and birth something completely new and fresh. Not a competing site, but something new. I look forward to it.

I think it's great that there are alternatives. They will sort themselves out in the long run. We don't have to figure it out today.

If any of the alternative forums prove to be interesting or useful, I , personally, have the stamina to follow more than one.

Jack, I've really grown to like you in the last day and a half. perhaps someday I'll have a chance to tell you why.

KB - Larrys site is still-born. He'll realize that within a few days (or weeks, he's pretty stubborn) and will head over to JGOOs. His cheerleaders are probably already there unpacking their pom-poms.
How long then until it degenerates into what we've seen here? I don't know JGOO at all, but is he really going to reign in Larry's Cherokee-country charm? And how do you suspect Larry will respond if he tries?
I say Jack's right. The internet is big enough for two CR-inspired Fora.

The internet is more than big enough.
People are just in for a surprise when they try their hand at admin. I've done it...
I op'd a huge IRC room for a few years, and I know it can be hard to keep something like that alive.
I just know that dividing too much too early kill both halves, and I want everyone to stick together if possible. But people will go where they choose, that's all.
Let me ask you this, do you think I would let things get out of hand if I had the power to stop them, or do you think i would let it turn into a heck-hole?

actually Larry will probably be cool if certain people aren't around to bug him... just a guess.
I bet many of you newbies would have really liked Larry if not for the political splinters that strewed all the prejudgement infopap which really served to bring out his bluster.
