My car is 8 years old and has 65,300 miles on it. It had 5900 miles on it when I bought it, so I'm averaging less than 7500 a year but that's an inaccurate account. When I first got the car I had an active 8th grader with numerous school, athletics and social activities, several carpools and the car was also our family vacation car. Things have changed. Some months now I drive less than 200 miles.

There was a time that we were doing 20,000 miles per year per vehicle. We have a new passat as of the end of June. With 2 500+ miles trips on it, it now has 2000 miles. I'm confident that we can keep it to 1000 miles per month.
My volvo we bought in Feb '98 with 65000 miles. It now has 168000 miles...that's about 15,000 miles per year.
All of our relatives are at least 180 miles away.

My grandfather was born there -- his mother grew up in a lovely old home in the Garden District that was, until recently, owned by a member of the McIlhenny family. I've yet to visit the city, but it's on my short list of places to see! Still have relatives living in Hammond.

Hard to say, because I ride my motorcycle part of the year.
I bought a Saturn new in 1992. In 2003 I sold it with a smidgen under 100,000 miles.
Now I have two cars -- the station wagon for when I need to transport large amounts of stuff or people, and the Miata for commuting.
And I just sold my primary motorcycle.
My commute is around 10 miles each way, but I work four 10-hour days a week.
So in other words, I really don't know.

I actually live in the closest western suburb, Metairie (pronounced MET' Ah Ree), but my mom still lives in the city itself. It's such a small area geographically that I don't put much mileage on the car. There's no reasonable bus service on my commute, but it's only 5 miles each way. And most of the spots I use for errands (malls, groceries, cleaners, etc.) are even closer. Lots of folks are moving north of Lake Pontchartrain now and are commuting 30 to 50 miles each way. Newer homes and better real estate values, but I don't think I could handle burning that much time in the car. Hammond is about 40 minutes northwest, around the lake. If you plan to visit, think October through April. Most folks just wilt if they come in summer and experience 95 degrees with 95% relative humidity. New Orleans is a walk-around type of city, but even natives don't do much walking around in May - September. Please let me know if you plan a trip. I'd love to tell you about things to see, places to stay, and places to eat (we do a lot of that here ).
