Yes, I agree.

Other ideas:

- Consider setting up a Flame Wars room for those threads/members that get out of hand even by the (almost non-existent) CR standards.
- Give the volunteers the ability to move threads, but not remove them. E.g. if a PF post gets out of line, move it to the Flame Room.

Yes, perhaps draft a boilerplate text that says something precise and neutral like "the contents of (thread name) have been moved to the Flame Room." End of it, no lectures, no nada.

- Change the "Report Post" (snip)

Sorry, my computer ate some of your reply... how about disabling the "report post" option (if possible) in the Flame Room, or establishing a policy that people in the Flame Room enter at their own risk... moderators can check it out for filth (only). Bottom line: nothing gets deleted permanently except Level 1 stuff. If people want to go into the Flame Room and continue they're certainly allowed (but we'd all know they lost it and angels are weeping).

On to other things: Larry said the following: "It isn't going to happen this time, whether you approve of *how* it gets done or not." I'm assuming Larry has been talking directly to Frank, because at this point only Frank would have the ability to guarantee that something was going to happen (or not going to happen), and Larry really wouldn't be in the position to make such a bold statement unless he had talked directly to Frank.

No, I haven't been talkind directly to Frank. I don't have to. A *year* ago Frank tried to get this done. He has offered his desire to see us do something in this thread also. What I have done is provide some leadership to cut through all the cackling hens and people who put their own agendas ahead of the good of the forums, and taken control of *my* thread. You *do* know what leadership is don't you?

Constructive work is being done because someone needed to cut through the people who run around like chickens with their heads cut off, never getting anywhere, never accomplishing anything other than to squawk. I knew when I restarted this thread that the judgment impaired would be back to do what they always do, and that to get passed them and accomplish anything would take an *******. I'm just the ******* to get it done. I don't mind taking the slings and arrows if it means the end result is to improve a place that many of us love and have devoted a lot of time to. Frank asked us to do this, all I'm doing is forcing those who have nothing to contribute but negativism to get out of the way. Agree with my tactics or not, they work, and we have so many mindless geese running around the only way to get anything done is to go over them.

Now, back to the productive effort, and hopefully (thought I assure you it won't be) there will be no more disruption from the geese and we can arrive at a proposal that we can offer to Frank.

Thank you for the nomination pique'.

Ooh, I can't wait for your invaluble sarcasm and wit to become indispensible in this forum, that would really knock things into shape.. [Roll Eyes]"

You misspelled "invaluable" and "indispensable" You now know their correct spelling.

Then sarah_blueparrot goes on to say:

"And I think the selection of moderators needs to be done a little more carefully then a few members just throwing together a list.
I think if you look at the top you'll find that it took about 12 pages to 'throw' a list together, and that that was what the discussion was about.

And I think that each moderator candidate should have their posting histories thoroughly researched before making the decision to select them.

-AKindWord
Ok, you go and look through 20,000+ posts to see whether these people really are worth our time. I think you'll find that a) they are, because they're still here with reputations vaguely intact (which is more than can be said for yours), b) It's not a question of selection, it's a question of volunteering. Volunteers HELP. (Which is more than can be said for you)."

OK, thank you sarah_blueparrot. This gives me a marvelous opportunity to demonstrate something.

Obviously sarah_blueparrot does not like me. I don't care. However, I certainly haven't provoked her up until this thread perhaps. Beyond that me and her have never exchanged a solitary word.

But she's definitely laying into me now. Frankly, I'm really not interested in anything she has to say and I normally wouldn't respond at all but this does help me to illustrate my point.

If this were Larry with deletion and/or banning capabilities, and sarah_blueparrot was laying into him like that, her posts and perhaps sarah_blueparrot herself would be history.

If I were moderator, (of which I am **NOT** asking to be), ms. blue_parrot would stay with none of her posts edited or deleted. And not because I think any of her posts hold any value. But rather because they do not meet the criteria for removal.

It may be too difficult to review tens of thousands of posts. But at least a sample of a few hundred posts over the time each candidate has been here can be reviewed.

My only concern is moderating powers, in any form, falling into the wrong hands.

Duly noted. Now, go back and read the thread so you'll know that nothing you wrote has anything to do with anything regarding what's being talked about.

Just my quick thoughts:

I like the idea of having another person with the power to remove posts that include profanity or pornographic material. (Or links to profane or pornographic sites.)

Just need someone who logs on regularly to keep an eye out for that kind of thing.

That person should immediately delete those kinds of posts. All other questionable posts can always be referred to Frank. There's no need for Larry or anybody to be "King of Piano World" besides Frank. But a trash man for the obvious stuff could be very helpful.

I'd also like to remind people that the first amendment states that "Congress shall make no law..." Frank, being different than congress, can do whatever he wants with piano world.

My offer to help still stands. \:D I really don't think it'd be that much work, either. 98% of the stuff here seems fine to me. It's just that we tend to fixate on that other 2% when it surfaces.

(Anyone who runs a decent-sized business or teaches school knows this truth of administration: that 2% of the people account for 90% of the problems and the time spent fixing them. I'm responsible for about 250 students per semester. This week, 2 of them are taking up 4 hours of time (mostly paperwork, phone calls, and meetings involving some disciplinary action...)

I think Frank has taken care of the profanity. Here's a test of four letter words: ****, ****, ****. And a five letter word - this one is surprisingly inane: nasty. And a seven letter word: *******.

That's funny. This AM I used the word "nasty" in a post, and it got bleeped out. Let's try these two: damn and hell

Hmmm - I guess the software's tamer than I thought. In any event, seems to me Frank is quite on top of things.

Little Miss AKW, who claims be a mere little college girl who doesn't even own a piano yet, was recently spotted in the PF giving quite specific pricing information on relatively obscure brands of pianos used. Quite a feat for someone of the type person "she" claims to be.

This has already been addressed in the piano forum under the 20K grand thread.

But for the record, I think that Larry knows deep down that I am not an ex-forum member. But it seems to be the only way he might be able to get rid of someone he doesn't like. By convincing enough forumites that I am a returned 'troll'.

Sad

IMO Kreisler would be an excellent choice[probably the best] as a trash remover in the PC, which I visit often. I've read many of Kreisler's posts for the past two years.

And I would like Larry to help remove PF trash if he would agree to reconsider. I don't always agree with Larry on things, but his ***motives*** in this thread -- cleaning up PW from blatantly offensive posts -- are beyond questioning. That's the only relevant point: would he do a good job? IMO he definitely would.

this is ridiculous. a few porno pictures get posted and suddenly we need a police force? let me tell you, you cannot stop these things from happening, and potential advertisers know that.

the "report this post" has always worked just fine. maybe larry doesn't want people to be able to report his posts any more? if i were an advertiser and were watching his behavior during this thread, his bullying and threatening, i wouldn't want to advertise here. possibly frank has warned larry to clean up his act? is that the reason for all this bluster?

these proposals will utterly change the character of the piano forums and i do not agree with them. this place will lose the open atmosphere that made it special. already a large contingent of some of our most articulate and helpful members have left, and i foresee an even larger exodus if these proposals are instituted.

I was hoping someone would follow up on this bit
. . .

Larry:

 Quote:
I'm getting emails from all over the place from people who have been here a long long time telling me that if I *don't* succeed at coming up with a solution to offer Frank, they are history, because they are getting tired of people who insist on whining gumming everything up.
I hope it's ok if I humbly inquire about this. People are going to leave if things continue to be "gummed up" and Larry has received a deluge of these e-mails?

Who are these people, and what is their beef, exactly? Surely it's not the smut issue. If they are that concerned, perhaps they will allow Larry to reveal their names if their remarks were confidential. Or perhaps if they are especially interested they are following this pivotal thread and would explain their dissatisfaction themselves.

If Larry knows something the rest of us don't, this seems like a great time to fill us in.

Sorry. Private conversations are just that - private. If they wanted you to know what they said they'd have just posted it.

What is their beef? Well intentioned but nonetheless clueless people who lack the judgment and common sense to follow what's being discussed, who instead of contributing constructively spend their time running around complaining, nursing grudges, finding fault, and otherwise getting in the way. Maybe you'd like to go back through this thread and see how many of your posts fall into which category.
