I have seen a secondhand 1999 Yamaha disklavier MPX1 for sale; would it have silentpiano capability and the possibility of editing midi files by attaching a laptop to the back of the control unit (FDD only)?

The MPX1Z does have the silent function. It also has MIDI in & out, so you can connect it to a laptop for recording and playing back to/from the laptop. It will read e-seq and Standard MIDI Files format 0 & 1.

Another piece of advice: make sure you get a piano tech to check it. Disklaviers, more than conventional pianos, can have a hard life as many sit in hotel lobbies and bars playing 16 hours a day.

I have now been told that it has silent mode and a DKC500R control unit which has XG II sounds loaded. Does this make sense? What am I missing over the later U1 disklaviers?

Later models, such as the Mark III, will have a CD drive which allows you to play audio CDs as well as Yamaha's PainoSoft plus Audio disks. There will also be other functions, such as Smart Key. You will also find that the Piano voice for the Silent functions has improved.

Many thanks; I primarily want the piano for programing piano accompaniments for my daughter's violin and horn playing. Any recomendations on inexpensive sequencer software for polishing the piano accompaniment I will record on the disklavier. Presumably a MkII DKC500R can only record E-SEQ files?

The DKC500R should be able to record in E-SEQ and SMF format0. It will read both of these formats, as well as SMF format1.

I have now bought this piano and it is great. I have recorded some tracks onto the piano's memory. Can I now copy them onto a disk and edit them in my sequencing software on a Windows PC ? Or do I need to run a special utility so that the Windows PC can see/read the diskette?
