OK, so now speaking of my mother (who, thankfully, never visits PW!), who'd like to take a stab at her first name? I'll give you a hint: it's an alternate spelling for an old-fashioned name that has surged in popularity in the past 15 years or so.

Ummm, no. Wrong. On so many counts. (Yes, I know that was bad grammar. It's poetic license, dagnabbit!)

If I'm not mistaken, you've told us about maybe 50 times that it's Magdalen. (If not, it's just me getting senile.)

No, not Ella. The "prince charming" in the hint is not from a fairy tale.

I take it I'm not senile? (Dang, and I was planning on using that excuse for forgetting to buy people Christmas gifts! ;\) )

Maybe your mother's maiden name was Donoghue.

No, not Greta.

Candy is sweet, but not short enough. Ruth and Joan have the correct number of syllables, but the wrong number of letters.

The name does not have four letters, nor is a shortened form of any other name.

You mean it's not, like, Chris, normally short for Christine (this was my guess for Cindy's name) but actually christened (getting confused now) Chris?
