I came across a Becstein upright from 1925 in a piano shop.

I had just tested a 160 cm Yamaha grand and the difference was to the favour of the upright.

- richer sound
- longer basss sustain
- lighter and not so deep touch.

I was very surprised by the powerfull trebble.
Also the damping was acceptable. Sustain pedal worked smoothly.

This piano hade been renovated in the 90-ties, including new hammers, strings and pins. Pinblock was original. Soundboard has no cracks.
Outer apppearance is fair.

As the sound beats the sound of new pianos costing twice the price, I suggested this second hand as an alternative for my friend, considering that the use is not very heavy

What are the biggest drawbacks of such a choice apart from the risk of mechnical breakage of some part of the action?

Price suggestion was 4300 €. I think you can negotiate and get included a bench, transportation and first tuning. New Ritmüller about 5000 €, New Yamaha UI over 8000 €, Bechstein Academy 124 cm 12000 €.

If it is as you describe, there are no major drawbacks.
