Are you a piano professional?
Do you make your living in a piano-related field?

Are you a professional pianist, tuner, teacher, dealer, or manufacturer?

Here's what I'm thinking...[/b]

We now have over 5000 members, and more joining every day. Newbies have no idea who our helpful professional members are. (BTW, this isn't a slight on our wonderful and helpful amatuer members, but I have to start somewhere).

I'm thinking about creating a "roster" of our professional members. This would be a series of pages on the main Piano World site (linked from the forums of course) with a list of the professional members. It would probably list about 10 members per page.

I'm still in the very early stages of the concept, but it would likely be something like this... (website, picture, and contact would be optional)

Piano Tuner[/b]
Name[/b] Frank Baxter
(thumbnail picture here)
Bio[/b] 30 years tuning pianos, owner/webmaster for Piano World
Website:[/b] www.PianoWorld.com
Contact Info:[/b] webmaster@pianoworld.com

Think of it as a chance to get a (small) free plug on Piano World. In return we get to boast about why Piano World and the Forums really are one of the best places on the Web for all things piano.

Please Take the Poll[/b]
Please take the short poll, and of course you are welcome to reply to this thread too.

I guess it wouldn't be a surprise that I'd support this idea 100%. In terms of PIano Teachers .... Those of us who have worked so hard to acquire credentials and who have practiced our skill for years are often dismayed by an influx of musicians who haven't "paid the piper" so to speak.

I remember giving a talk at "Career Night" at a local High School. I represented possible jobs in the music field. In the question/answer period, one kid who'd been vigorously taking notes, stood up and said , " Gee ... why go to University when you can make $80,000 a year teaching piano?"

I gasped and gathered my composure before replying. " Well let's consider the facts here. I studied piano from the age of nine, and got my Juilliard degree at 22. Meanwhile I acquired two more degrees, one from the Royal Conservatory of Music and another from the Quebec Conservatoire. Plus for the last four years of that time, practiced about 6 to 8 hours a day! Party time? No way!

Okay now ... tabulate the hours on your notepad. And you'll see in terms of time it took about what it takes to become a BRAIN SURGEON. Now add the fact that NO teacher will take private students for 40 hours a week ... that's 80 students. And to command $50 an hour, you'd better have some degrees in your hand.

I'll bet right now college is beginning to look like an easier choice ... eh ..."

But later when I began to think a bit about the situation I thought I shouldn't have been that harsh on the young man. Because there ARE people out there teaching with NO qualification or something at the level of a Grade VIII level. There are probably many more "hobby" teachers than those who've worked for their qualifications.

So yes ... I do support this idea of a poll. Experience does count. So do qualifications.

But above all what can't be quantified is "heart". So be sure one of those questions asks about the teacher's feelings about music and teaching. My own crusade is to instill the LOVE OF MUSIC before anything else.

Is it for only those who currently live from piano related jobs?
There was a time when I was living from playing piano, but I don't do that anymore - I rarely play recitals and can't make enough money for living from it. I have got MA of piano performance, so I think my advices and qualifications still can be helpful for others. I don't teach piano, because I don't have personal predispositions to do it in a longer run, but I've a little experiance (2 years, various levels) in this too. I'm here for less than two months and I think my advices helped people already.

So my pool:
Job: "Retired" pianist
Name: Veronique Marie
Bio: MA of piano performance, 2 years of teaching
