NEW ON DVD APRIL 8 …

THE GOLDEN AGE OF THE PIANO

In this fascinating 80-minute film, American piano expert David Dubal presents a definitive survey of the great virtuosi of the early and mid 20th century – aptly termed "The Golden Age of the Piano." With its unique historic footage, the film features performances from such legendary pianists as Horowitz, Van Cliburn, Cortot, Paderewski, Rubinstein, Gould and Arrau.

Included is a special 2003 Claudio Arrau Centenary bonus feature of Arrau’s 1983 performance of Beethoven’s Piano Concerto no.4, with Riccardo Muti and the Philadelphia Orchestra.

AndrewG,

Thanks for the DVD info. I'd be interesting in purchasing it. Do you have any idea where it would be sold? Thanks again.

Thanks for the info Andrew. Isn't this one of the 1000's of VCD's you already have though!? ;\)

By the way, in case you haven't noticed, I'm planning another piano party at my place. Hope you can make it. We're planning either Sunday May 11th or Sunday May 18th. There some more info in the "Front Range Piano Party" thread in the Pianist Corner.

Hope all is well with you.

Regards,
Dan

No no no, Dan! I wish I had 1000 VCDs. As a matter of fact I have only about 100. I'm in the process of converting my Yundi Li's Chopin Competition Winner DVD to VCD. Hope I can get it done and share with my musical friends because VCDs are easily duplicable.

Let's try this again! Glad to hear about this new DVD. I only recently got a copy of "The Art of Piano" which I thoroughly enjoyed. I only wish the new one has more complete performances of pieces. I always enjoy seeing great pianists of the past at the keyboard.

I did it. My effort in transferring the DVD to VCD is a success! Today my co-worker tried this on the PC. He was pleasantly surprised and impressed with the video/audio quality. The original DVD is 2.7Gig. I compressed it to 734meg to burn on a 700meg CD-R. I'm not a techi at all. I could never figure out how that could fit. All I'm concerned and feel very happy about is the end result. I could not contain myself for this new experience!

I've had the laserdisc of this for several years. Glad to hear it's being released on DVD.

So Hank,

Are you saying that Golden Age of Piano is a video that is years old rather than a new one? Just curious.

Thanks for the info, Andrew!! -- I'll look for it!!

Also, would you mind telling me how you converted a DVD to VCD? (What programs, where to find them, etc) I have a Zone 2 Merchant-Ivory movie I purchased that I would love to be able to convert to VCD to play in my regular DVD player. (By email is also OK, my email is in my profile!)

Thanks,
Brad

All you need, then, is an all-zone DVD player. Nowaways it's available and not hard to get your hands on one of them.

Yeah, I had considered that - I found them online (there are none locally here). But figured that was too expensive for just 1 dvd.

I changed the region code on my PC & can view it, but once I change the region back to 1, I can't change it again.

Also, the player would have to convert PAL to NTSC. (The local high end store has a $500 converter for this purpose!?!?!!!)
