I was dreadful. I got 7 of 20, and I couldn't come up with a consistent methodology.

First I figured fake smiles would be bigger. Then I decided, no, real smiles would have head movement. Then I swerved and decided real smiles would start with a naturally smiley expression and increase from there. Then I decided to just go with the women and penalize them if they didn't display any teeth.

Cindy -- smiling right now

Spot The Fake Smile

Results
You got 18 out of 20 correct
Look at the labels below each image to see which smiles are genuine and which are fake.
Ticks and crosses show which smiles you got right and wrong.
Click on the image if you want to see the smile again.

Yippee!!

It's all in the eyes and the speed with which their face returns to it's non-smiling expression. wink

The speed?

Which is more genuine -- a slow recovery or a fast one?

Jeez, I only got 9 out of 20. I was so distracted by the individuals themselves... particularly #13 who had a weird hairline.

I was also trying to figure out their experimental procedure to get people to do real smiles but turn them off quickly.

I'll try again now that I know the secret...

I got 18 right also...I was a little hard on one of the men, I think. I took one look at him and decided "genuine" was not something he was capable of. smile I got all the women right, but missed two "genuine" men. It's easy to tell really. It never occurred to me to look at their mouths. Dead eyes are a dead give away. Which ones did you miss? I got the last guy in the third row, and the next to the last guy in the fourth wrong.

That was interesting! I got 16 of 20. I was watching the eyes and shoulders.

16 right!

Genuine smiles, on the other hand, are generated by the unconscious brain, so are automatic. When people feel pleasure, signals pass through the part of the brain that processes emotion. As well as making the mouth muscles move, the muscles that raise the cheeks – the orbicularis oculi and the pars orbitalis – also contract, making the eyes crease up, and the eyebrows dip slightly.

I got 18 out of 20. I got 11 and 17 wrong. I thought that the fake smiles looked somewhat more "artificial" than the real ones, though I have no idea what exactly I was looking for.

I only got 12 out of 20. But I got better as it went along...

That was bizarre, wasn't it? And how do THEY know which smiles were fake and which weren't? I mean, what did they say to the people - "ok, fake a smile, good. Now smile for real"?

smile Jodi (that was a fake one)
smile Jodi (that was a real one)

:p

I too have wondered about their methodology, and here's what I've come up with:

They get these people to volunteer for an experiment but don't tell them exactly what it is. So when a person is standing there, wondering what in God's name is gonna happen, the experimenter makes some sort of off-hand banter and probably slips a real corker of a joke in there...something like "Ok, now I just need you to drop trow so I can measure the radius of your anus...JUST KIDDING!" The person smiles, of course. A little later, after he or she has recovered, the experiementer asks for a fake smile. Hence, at the end, he has a real smile and a fake smile from each person that he can choose from.

Just an idea. smile

17 correct

I tried to come up with an answer before I pushed the start button. One time I tried to view it a 2nd time but ta-ta-ta!!!

In most cases I believe I stayed with my first response.
