Ah, but in this case, the inside joke was the avatars.

Sarabande, I share your feeling about inside jokes. It's like walking into a party where everyone is smoking marijuana and laughing at something stupid. Its not fun if you're not high yourself and you don't know what they are talking about.

I'm surprised that Cindy hasn't come back to explain any of this. I was just (gently) yanking her chain by using an avatar from someone she wouldn't want to "emmulate". After awhile, when this thread sinks into oblivion, I'll change back to my old Shakespearean self. Anyway, if you found me where I currently post my avatar is my real self (20 years ago when I was thinner).

I first came here for piano advice and then stayed because of the political (and other) discussions in the old coffee room. When the lot of the coffee room posters were thrown out and the doors closed, many of us left and only came back here for special occasions. I came back because my long piano search was reaching a climax and needed some quick info (which I got, thank you PW!). Then I saw the post on avatars and couldn't help myself. I mean, the joke was just sitting there and I couldn't pass it up.

I forgot all about this thread after my first post! What a funny thread!

Well, FWIW, my remarks didn't pertain to Larry. I was thinking of someone whose name escapes me, something like AWF. He/she posted under one of the standard avatars, some young girl or something, and he/she was in constant squabbles here until shown the door.

However, I will share a couple of avatar variants I've used. First, there's winter:

Then there's summer:

With many thanks to Jodi!

Kincaid,

I'll leave you all to your avatar "reunion" party. You must have a streak of graciousness as you felt indebted to post in my login name thread. BTW, is the guy with the glasses you're avatar in one of the other forums you're in? Enjoy!

Especially in the Coffee Room, while it was still around here at PW, members became associated with their avatars. After a while, nobody had to look at the names of people posting - just look at the avatar, and you know who it is.

So the joke here was when Cindy commented that avatars have sentimental value and are associated with different people, Kincaid changed his avatar to Larry's and said, "Just what are you saying, Cindy?" Then Kenny changed his avatar to Jolly's and then everybody started changing their avatars to those associated with other members. It got really funny when someone was confused with Cindy, because he had changed to her avatar!

I just went to my profile and discovered an option in which I enabled, "hide avatars of other users". Now I don't have to look at any avatars, ha!

Let me just say - as a newbie, consider my head scratched.

I do kind of know what you all are talking about - associating the avatar with the member... I hope to get my avatar up soon.

Sorry, I'm Southern Baptist. Latin is pretty close to speaking in toungues, isn't it?

I've never had a nun rap my knuckles in Latin class......I admit my education is sometimes lacking.....

Boy, it is taking forever for this thread to sink out of sight. I've been waiting for it to do so because I should probably change my avatar back.

(insert foot-tapping noise)

This place is dead - no, strike that - it is on life support.
