Just as I was getting ready to hit the road and do some audio recording sessions back East and visit family for the holidays, I got asked to shoot a YouTube video of a Steingraeber 205 Christmas concert. And not my wife playing. My first professional video recording gig!

The performer was H. Gerald Anderson, Professor of Music, Olivet Nazarene University, Bourbonnais, IL. With whom I was previously unfamiliar. And who I found more and more impressive as I worked with the audio recordings.

I used the same approach as recent videos... shooting from a distance with a long lens and a camera-mounted mic as well as micing the piano separately with my DPA/Sound Devices audio rig stashed behind the piano. But the tape recorder battery went dead after the 1st 9 pieces... so the last 3 pieces relied entirely on the camera mic. Since there wouldn't be any singing, I left the vocal mic and Bose PAS home.

I also uploaded mp3 audio recordings of 3 of the selections, in which I took special care to preserve the relative dynamics of the performance... the performer mentioned that he examined the piano immediately before the concert to determine it's softest playability which he illustrated in the 2nd of the mp3's below:

Virginia, I am pretty sure that piano is less than 1 year old. I can almost still hear the factory voicing through the recording.

I asked the store owner what prep he did and he said just a tuning and no voicing or anything else. I think the piano got it's 3rd tuning right before this concert.

Keith, [/b] The melody notes in the "Away..." MP3 have a nasal, metallic quality which I don't hear at all when listening to Eric Himy's Homage to Schumann CD. (Listening now to "Arabesque in C.")

Any thoughts?
