I'm so glad you liked that arrangement! I remember knocking my head trying to come up with an accompaniment line for "Moon River" that didn't sound too soupy, too cheesy...very difficult, given the inherent simplicity of the line and harmony...not much to work with...then, driving home from my studio one night, i think there was a full moon out...i kept thinking, "moon...moon...lunar...lune..." Then it hit me,
"Claire de lune"!! I ran through both pieces simultaneously in my head, and was amazed to hear that they actually fit together almost perfectly! I had to tweak a few things in the Debussy here and there, but much of it was surprisingly intact...
I played it for Jeff Khaner, and he burst out laughing! He thought it was too wild to fit two well-known pieces like that together, and i went back to the drawing board and actually wrote a second version that sounded somewhat impressionistic, but more or less original...
When it came time to record the CD, we recorded my 2nd version first...then, just for kicks, i suggested just trying the Debussy version.
Well...i think i heard the engineer's jaw drop on the other end of the mike! He really, really liked it...and judging from the number of hits it seems to be getting, looks like most other folks do too! Isn't that a funny story?
Anyway, glad you liked it - i'll post a little message as soon as the Jazz album gets released.
Take care!
