Hello-

Wondering if any of you wonderful teachers have heard of the Amadeus home music school. My husband, 5 year old daughter and I are looking at taking piano lessons. They match teachers with families. My daughter would have a teacher who is experienced with children and my husband and I would have a different one. They do background checks and seem fairly priced. Any information would be great.

Thank you!

Melissa, I'm curious, what with so many very fine teachers in Seattle, you are interested in this particular program.

You might contact Ben Klinger at Sherman Clay for a list of all Seattle area teachers. I would steer you to Jennifer Bowman, a fairly recent Juilliard grad who is still building her studio and might have room.

Dear Melissa,

Background checks on the teachers? Do you mean resume checks out with college credentials in music, or as criminal check?

And, the prices seem reasonable? What does that mean? Half an hour? An hour?

Once you sign a contract that you don't fully understand or can't commit to you will regret it.
Contracts are necessary with many piano studios as they show intentions to contract with commitment and responsibility.

However, with this contract, you may be doing all the paying into the sunset if you don't know how to terminate from the contract.

The piano lessons will be one area of negotiation of goal setting and practicing for the piano teachers instructions, the other will be the business end.

If you put your zip code into Learning Musician and your "piano" preference, many profiles will come up with photos of teachers in your area.

If you go to Washington State Music Teachers Association, there will be a list of Certified teachers in WA State - you may need to go to MTNA - which is the national association for the certified teachers list.

John's advice is also very valid about Sherman Clay.

Please made sure you get real value for your money invested.

I wish you well.

Betty

I will say one thing, the website is very creepy. I mean there is absolutely no information on it. I'm always leery about doing any business with or being involved with anyone who's name and physical address are not listed.

When you click on the form it takes you to another website. music-housecalls.com. I did a whois search and the owner of that website is someone named Carl Sgro from Laredao Texas.

The whole thing looks fishy to me.

Not a teacher, but here is my opinion.

I agree with DameMyra. The website looks more like a site that is set up to make money off the teachers they send to your house than a site that is aimed at providing a community service.

I would not do business with this site either.

Rich

Two views:

1. Organizations like this exist to reduce the transactions costs of putting teachers and students together. They intermediate, much like banks that put lenders and borrowers together who otherwise would have more difficulty finding each other. The organization takes certain risks and incurs certain costs (hence their charge) but it reduces costs and risks for the other participants (hence their willingness to pay).

2. Organizations like this prey on people who have little information and/or little taste (or ability) to confront the issues of acquiring information.

After looking at the web site, I would learn toward door number 2 in this case. That is a cheesy web site that inspires NO confidence that they are actually providing a valuable service. It seems more geared to snaring those who are unwary and/or who really don't know how to get started in evaluating the options available to them.

If you require a teacher who comes to
your house, then in that context, this
website might the right one for you. Teachers
who teach at your home are typically
the "vagabonds" of the profession, barely
making ends meet, and maybe living in a
small studio apt. without even a piano--
although they might be fine teachers.
Such teachers, operating on the fringes
of the profession as they do, might
have difficulty getting referrals, and
so an organization that matches them up
with students would be just the thing
for them.

That's an insightful observation. I've often wondered how these teachers make ends meet.

Well, some of us have other day-jobs.

Gyro's comment would offend many, many piano teachers I know. I'm lucky to live near a town that boasts FIVE large-scale music schools, all within a 10 mile radius of each other. But even despite their immense capacity, they are fiercely competing against each other for students because of all the high overhead costs.

In addition, there are HUNDREDS of independent piano teachers who teach in the area. Some teachers have studios of their own. Some don't. Either way, with the high cost of living, very few of us can make ends meet. I'm one of the lucky ones because I have a day job. I cannot support myself teaching piano alone, no matter how good I get, because there are simply so many teachers around here, which dilutes the student population.

I kid you not--there are HUNDREDS of teachers. And that's only counting the ones in the professional organization. Who knows how many more teachers there are who aren't in the association.
