Does anyone have a recommendation for a music theory book - modes, harmony, counterpoint, maybe progressing to beginning composition? I am a beginning player - I can read music (slowly), do the major scales, and most 7-chords, but not much else yet. What theory books are used at the conservatory level and what should I read first so I can understand them?

Have you checked this out with your teacher? He/she would be familiar with your current skill level and be in a good poistion to make an appropriate recommendation.

$64.80 seems too much for it.
Is there something simpler that is lower priced?

Good books have always been expensive. If it offers valuable input $80.00 will be money well spent.

Has anyone used this book with the CD?.

Regards,
Steve

In addition, the other commonly used university level texts are Kostka/Payne and Aldwell/Schachter.

For a less expensive text, check out Alfred's Essentials of Music Theory. It doesn't realy have any counterpoint and only covers really basic harmony, but it's good for the basics.
