hey people I'm going to start teaching next september when I turn 16. I've been playing for about 8-9 years, and I'm thinking about teaching entry-level people. I was just wondering what kind of things to focus on for teaching, because I honestly haven't done that kind of stuff that much...any tips?

I'm a year or so older than you and I started teaching about 8 months ago. I'm about to start three (possibly 4 more pupils) in a couple of weeks.
My advice would be to talk it over with your teacher - mine has been invaluable for advice about teaching. Another thing I try to do is teach as I was taught. I was taught well...I like to think I teach reasonably well.

Another thing would be to search a thread I strated a few weeks ago - I think it was called 'are my lesson prices causing me this problem?' and I got a lot of good advice about how much I should be charging - it might be helpful to you.

The thing I'm most concious of is not passing on any bad habits - so I'm strict about curled fingers etc. - just as my piano teacher was with me.

And also - is there a particular reason you are going to wait until you are 16 to start?

Good luck - I'm sure you'll find you enjoy it. =)

I'm waiting until 16 because i'm going to work at this place called MECA. In the building theres a bunch of little rooms with pianos, violins, etc. You have to be 16 to work there, but its easy because basically other people give you students to teach, and you don't have to go anywhere. Its just a little job to get me introduced to teaching. I also don't think i'm really going to be picking prices. And if I am, I'm mostly working there for the experience, not the money. For now anyway, because I'm still in high school ;\)

Also, your advice about talking to my teacher and not passing on bad habits is very helpful. I have a few not so great things I tend to do while playing, like not sitting up straight, not curling my fingers, and like not like using my arms enough to play. This year and stuff i'm working mostly on technique stuff, and I'm getting better at it thankfully.

thanks for the advice
