I have an elderly woman that takes piano lessons. She hurt her back in November and took two months off from lessons. She started back and the piano at the studio works for her fine and she takes an hour lesson. The piano is a Boston Studio. However, she says she can't sit more than 5 minutes at home. She has a Technics digital and an old grand at home and she has trouble sitting for more than 5 minutes at home. Is this a piano height problem or a bench height problem? Maybe it's the difference between the piano and the bench. The Studio is higher. Any ideas out there??

People will tell you they know what they like but what they really mean is they like what they know.

Measure the distance between the top of the stool and the top of the keys on the piano that she finds comfortable, and get her to emulate this at home.

The music rest height may also be a problem. The upright will have a lower music rest, I think. This could be a real problem with the grand. Music rest problems often manifest as upper back pain.

Does she wear bifocals? A high music rest can also be a problem with these.
