Two of my students, ages 10 and 7, are traveling to Poland and other parts of Europe for 3 weeks. I would like to send them with an "assignment". What are your ideas?

I think vacations are about taking a break from one's day to day routine and to refresh the mind, body and spirit. If it were me, I'd allow them to enjoy their vacation without the burden of an assignment.

I'm not talking about a burden, but what a great opportunity to see new things!
I'm thinking of something like:

List 5 things you hear that are different here than there...or
Did you notice any different instruments anywhere?

That type of "assignment". Just so they are aware of what musical things they might see.

My apologies, I mistakenly thought you were talking about a 'practice your scales on your dinner table' type assignment.

Get them to close thier eyes on the plane, and imagine a keyboard. Then play thier repertiore on the keyboard with an imaginary hand.

It sounds funny, but I have learned pieces this way when I am away from the keyboard. It is a wonderful memory aid, because it kicks the "tactual crutch" from underneath you.

I don't know where else they're going, they don't even know. The older one doesn't even want to go! :-(

I have recommended that "table top" playing too. It really does help keep you "sharp" lol

I'm sure their mom will point things out for them to notice, but I'd like to engage them in finding things too.

Well, when my students go, if they are anywhere near Berlin, then I recommend the famous instrument museum there. Fabulous displays of pianos. If they are down by Munich or Nuernberg, there are German museums with great displays. I am not too familiar with the museums in France, but Brussels has an interesting museum (with old instruments).

There is, of course, Mozart's house in Salzburg, and Bach's birthhouse in Eisleben. Plus many others.

I would urge you to get an itinerary so you can make suggestions which would help the parents make this an educational trip.
