Which theory book would you recommend for an adult beginner that can be easily obtained in UK. I have just started lessons and although I can fairly well I am starting from scratch!!

You might want to check out Gary Ewer's web site and offering. Take a look at his free stuff. If you do order it please post back with a review. http://www.musictheory.halifax.ns.ca/

The ABRSM also publishes theory books aimed at their own examinations. I have the Pink and Blue books for teachers. I have found these to be readily available in good music shops. Might be worth checking out the ABRSM website too.
