"Acoustical" Issues in piano playing

As piano teachers, how important is it for our students to understand the "mechanics" of how the piano works. For example, for string players, it's very important for students to understand how sound is produced (the "pulling" and "pushing" of the bow over the string) I've found that many pianists don't really know how the piano works. They may have a general idea of the damper, hammers, string, etc, but not much more. Does anyone have any recommendations as to how to introduce students into gaining a better understanding of how the piano works? Also, just out of curiosity, what kind if "performance" issues do you and your students face? Thanks everyone!
