I have a question for you all, perhaps you can help!

I am ever looking to expand my knowledge of music history, as it helps not only my playing, but I can also help my students. I just finished a book on the Romantic Era, but it was fairly dry. I am now looking for books on the Enlightenment and on the Baroque eras.

Here is the challenge, however. Finding a book that gives accurate historical portrayals without being terribly dry and dull! If anyone has anything that they have read, or have heard that is good, I would love to know!

Thank you!

I purchased "The Enjoyment of Music" 8th edition by Machlis & Forney for my own historical education. Luckily I found it at a used book store for $7.98. A brand new edition will run ten times that price.

But it's more like a text book, so it may not be what you're looking for.

It looks to be a great read. I haven't actually read it yet though, just skimmed parts. I just wish I had the CD that originally came with it.
