Two weeks ago I began teaching a very enthusiastic 12 year old student. After becoming aquainted on the first lesson, going over some basic staff reading, I decided to work with her on the Faber&Faber series for Older beginners. Things are going well, she's remembering concepts week to week, and is happily practising everything I've assigned.

She really enjoys classical music. I'm looking forward to lending her my favourite CDs, as she has limited exposure. She is happiest picking out famous melodies (such as the melody from chopin's nocturne op9 no2) from classical pieces. Now, I want to give her a good base in technique and reading before plunging into even simple classical repetoire, but I don't want to hold her back in any way.

My question is, can anyone recommend any material or exercize to fast-track this process. While I want to keep her interested and stimulated, I don't want to neglect the importance of a solid foundation. Perhaps a good compromise would be enjoyable simple classical pieces. Any ideas/suggestions/words of caution?

Thanks in advanced,

Chelsey

Neil Kjos's publication has some good selections on classical repertoires that spreads out in 10 levels, they also have theory, and technic book that's quite suitable for someone who is serious about traditional piano study.

also, Harrison has a series called Celebration Series, they are also very good.

if you want to focus on technic, you may want to consider using Neil Kjos's Scale Skill book, they have it in 10 leves, starting from 1 octave scale (major and minor), chords, and I-IV-V7, progression, if her reading ability increases, you may want to consider Hanon finger exercises, Alfred and Faber both publishes them.

Thanks for your ideas :-) I really appreciate your responses to my posts. I talked with a few more teachers this week, and I have access to a full library of the Celebration Series. I'm going to look around for a technique book next time I'm at the music store.

Looking through the books in the library of the studio room I'm using, I found a series of Hanon exercizes edited by Boris Berlin... Has anyone heard of them, are they worthwhile?

Thanks

Chelsey

Make a comparison with different editions, my guess is most of them will look the same, which serve the purpose.
