Hey all,

Is anyone here from the Baltimore/Towson area, and do you have any knowledge of the teaching scene? Are students hard to get in this area? I would assume there would be a lot of competition with Peabody Prep, where I took lessons before college, but I would also assume that a lot of self-employed teachers are much less expensive than Peabody.

How much is reasonable to charge for one-hour lessons in the Baltimore area with the following credentials?...
1. BM in Piano Performance from UMD - College Park
2. BM in Piano Performance from UMD - College Park, MM in Piano Performance from Peabody Conservatory
3. BM in Piano Performance from UMD - College Park, MM in Piano Performance from Peabody Conservatory, DMA in Piano Performance from Peabody Conservatory

Thanks!!!

1. $25-30/hour
2. $30-35/hour
3. $35-40/hour

More if you have significant teaching experience.

I would agree, with the following caveats specific to this market

--More in the Washington area
--The Baltimore metro market is somewhat flooded with instructors so few self employed teachers are fully booked
--Most lessons are booked by the 1/2 hour
--if you are teaching in the student's home, you can charge a bit more, but your net will be reduced by your transportation time.

One a teacher has a reputation, I am not sure that credentials mean as much as their teaching performance. Particularly for the rather ordinary, run-of-the mill elementary school aged student (who I expect would make up the bulk of an average teacher's roster) the ability to extract the best from the student matter more than your credentials.

Remember - as a self employed teacher, the people making judgement on your performance (implicit in a decision to take/continue lessons) is usually a not-so musically educated parent.
