I'm watching a movie musical now ... (I'm also a voice student and English and History student) ... I am studying musicals and differing texts through society. My mind is making all these analytical notes in regard to time period, fashion in the period, themes, techniques, etc. This musical is really just for leisure, but I just realized I can leave the student side of me.

I post this in curiosity to those teachers, when you here someone play - a young child or even a learning adult do you feel the want to say something ... or is the teaching world separate to the other world?

Teaching and learning are the same thing. So no, I don't 'leave'. Then again, I also don't do entertainment.

The most difficult wisdom and self-discipline to acquire is probably to know when not to say anything, and allow real learning to happen through the process, when to step in and give it a tweak or nudge in the right direction, and when to do outright teaching or convention. So even if one is constantly teacher or learner, it doesn't necessarily lead to saying anything.

Well, put, keystring. There's always a part of me that analyzes when someone plays or sings, but this becomes a part of my own growth as a teacher. I never say anything to someone unless they solicit my advice or if they are already a student of mine.
