I have 10 yr old daughter. So far she has been able to play Fur Elise, Waltz in A minor(Chopin) fairly among other pieces.

I am thinking of find a local competition for her in Southern CA. Are these pieces good for competition(I guess they are)? Any recommendation on excellent pieces with uniqueness that can put her in advantage position, by not playing too common pieces.

Any recommendation on any competition venues are also appreciated since I don't know any. She is with Yamaha, and all they have are recitals.

Thanks

I've noticed that my sons play much better when playing something they like. Otherwise there is a tendency to just go through the motions. FWIW.

How long is your daughter playing? Is there any way to hear her play? It would be easier to suggest something after listening. May be you also cam write names of other pieces from her repertoire.

She has been taken Yamaha(5 yrs)and ABRSM(passed 2 exams with merit). I will get her repertoire for you Anna.

Hiracer,

Yes she picked the last 2 pieces herself: Fur Elise, Waltz in A. The trick is to have her listen and then pick pieces that you love to play, and also give her challenges. These are pieces that she plays besides her regular piano lessons.

Last weekend, I setup a retical for my 2 daughters and 4 friends at our party, and everybody loved it. My daughter got a good praise from other parents.

BTW I have also been playing but must admit way behind her right now. Basically I serve as a good critique as I have musical background, and a big fan of classical.

Try the Schubert Waltz in A minor.

Firstly, I would recommend speaking with your teacher about the festivals in the area in which she can participate. There are often competitive and non-competitive classes. The important thing is that she gain performance experience and receive tips from the adjudicators.

No particular piece will help you win. It's how you play the piece that counts.

I get the feeling you are looking for recognition for you, your daughter, or both of you. I think if you really want to succeed you have to cultivate a great interest in the composers and in their works. It's more important to gain a thorough music knowledge.

Unfortunately, I think she should not be with the Yamaha method at this age. She needs a good teacher from the conservatory or university, or a well-recommended piano teacher.

Good luck.

Anita

Candyman gives good advice!

Your child needs a private teacher. Make sure whomever you choose as a teacher has experience entering competitions, if that is what your child wants. This teacher will probably suggest playing alternate pieces, as both pieces you mentioned are frequently overplayed and poorly played (they rarely win competitions).

Good luck,

charlene
