Hi everyone! Let me start with some relavent (or useless haha) information about myself.

I am 14 years old (freshman in high school)and have been playing the piano since I was eight. More recently I got into playing in music competitions (actually i've only played one but I have 2 more coming in the next month) and building my repertoire. I'm currently doing some polishing on Rachmanninoff's Prelude in C# Minor in which I will perform for those 2 upcoming competitions. Basically, piano is what I consider to be my God-given ability and music will definately be a big part of my future even more than it is now.

But anywho...

A mother that lives down the street asked me to give her six-year-old son piano lessons. So, being myself, always looking for a challenge (hehe) I said yes. I know I am probably not the most fit to teach but if I would have said no she'd have gotten a 7th grade girl to do it. I've already given one lesson to him, in which I taught him Mary Had a Little Lamb and went over finger-numberings and note names and got his right hand in the right spot on the keyboard.

What I'm asking for are some teaching techniques for six-year-olds and a basic curriculum for somone his age. I don't want to teach bad habits or cause him to lose interest in piano playing. At that age, I know that he has a delicate mind but is capable of a lot in the years to come. I do feel confident in my knowledge of music but I need some ideas.

Thanks yall

-Carl

Carl: enlist your own piano teacher to help you in this project--s/he would be happy, I'm sure, to mentor you. I've helped my own students teach, and find it very rewarding. You want to be sure this little 6-year old gets the benefit of someone's experience, and piano teaching is a delicate profession: it's easy to discourage students by demanding too much, or not understanding how young minds work. So ask your own teacher--it'll be a great joint project. Good luck!
