Dear Teachers, Would you please help us out in The Non-Classical forum? We have no idea where the musicians term to play a "gig" comes from... If any of you have ideas will you please post in our Non-Classical forum for us ? Thank you in advance. My dad was a pro in the 20's and 30's, his profession and he played for a Society Band ... the sax... I never heard him use this term. My brother was pro for years... he had a Top 40's band and he used this term," I played a "gig." Very often... Sandy B...Thank you again for your thoughts to help us.

Well, I'm not a prude, but so you know, the origin of almost everything associated with jazz, which meant copulation, has sexual connotations or reference female body parts. And vulgar/crude vocabulary can be found in more than just music. We certainly don't have a lock on it.
