Hi, I'm a new member so i'm sorry if this is the wrong section. How are similar motion/chromatic similar motion and double octave similar motion scales played? I'm unsure how to play them and what is ment by double octive similar motion?

I'm not quite familiar with those terms, but my guess is similar motion would be opposed to contrary motion. Similar motion would then mean both hands would be ascending and descending together. Contrary motion is when the RH ascends while the LH descends, then the opposite. Chromatic means you play every note in half steps (as opposed to say, a major scale, which is: Whole step - whole step - half step - whole - whole - whole - half.) Double octave simply means you would play two octaves instead of one. For example, you would start on middle C and ascend beyond the following C and go until the next C before turning around and descending.

The fingering for playing 2 octaves would depend on what scale you're wanting to play. I'm not quite sure what scales you're referring to, but if you tell me then I can give you the correct fingering.

Similar motion is the UK's term to describe parallel motion.

Most scales follow a pattern of a group of three fingers (1-2-3) followed by a cross over or cross under of the thumb, and then a group of four (1-2-3-4). For scales that start on black keys, we deviate from the standard starting finger, but continue to follow the basic rule of a group of three coming before a group of four (with a few exceptions).

You haven't by any chance been reading ABRSM syllabi, have you?

Perhaps the most efficient thing to do is to get yourself a scale book which will set out all the most common forms of scales, and their fingering. If it's exam requirements you're wondering about, try the scale book which is recommended by the particular exam board in question.
