I am a sophomore Piano Pedagogy student, and a friend asked me for lessons starting next Friday. Of course I said yes. Problem: I've never taught anyone who has almost no musical knowledge. Where do I start? With some theory? Scales? And what about books? I have NO idea what I'm doing. I really want the experience, but where do I start?

Hi there: Two years ago I was a student with NO musical background at all, and my brilliant teacher managed to get me going without scaring me off at all. First lesson was all about posture and hand positions and what the notes on the piano were.

The first book I used was "Beautiful Etudes," by Victoria McArthur which has really wonderful beginner pieces, including a super-simple version of Ode to Joy that a student can play after just a lesson or two.

We started scales a couple months in -- my teacher finds them to be a boring necessity.

We also used a book called "Fingerpower" a few weeks in, and I enjoyed that too -- kind of a raw beginners' Hanon.

I can't say enough about "Beautiful Etudes," though -- really a fun, satisfying book (actually a series) for adult beginners.

Thanks for your help, yellowville! I also used one of the "Fingerpower" books a few years ago. I'll look into the "Beautiful Etudes" as well.
