I am starting to play piano and before going to get private lessons in London, I would like to learn a good base by myself. I would need to start from the scratch (it sounds very intimidating...). I would very much appreciate advices on which tutor book to get for music/piano adults start up. Should I look into DVD's lessons or softwares etc? and if yes which ones? There are millions out there. Thanks you very much for your advice.

A good tutor for adults is Alfreds all in one basic piano course which covers theory as well as practical things. My advice would be to go to private lessons to start with. DVD's and videos are all very well but a good teacher will work with YOU personally, get to know what you are capable of and plan your lessons accordingly.

I started with book one of the two part series (see link below). I liked it a lot. I have primarily been working on my own.

Of note. I don't suggest the CD as it is accompaniment, not a representation of the music. Their Christmas books are very nice as well.

Have fun,
Steve

Thank you Chris and Stevester. I am right now looking at some books -as adviced - and at the same time thinking if I could possibly afford some piano lessons Is I do understand your point Chris. I am a pro-drummer and for what it concerns drums, I would have suggerste exactly what you both have.Thank you very much indeed and if there is some of you who are based in London and would give out first lesson free then let me know.

I am using Alfred's All-in-One Adult course, and I think it is pretty good.

You might want to also check the Piano Forums section called "Links to Additional Resources".

If you need to learn note reading from scratch you might want to check out "Piano is Fun" ( http://www.pianoisfun.com/b/ , $25). I am using it and I think it is good for someone who does not have previous music experience and cannot read notes.

In my studio, I use the Alfred All-in-One course for adults. The Faber and Faber Adult Course is good too.
