This music is so beautiful... but how do i play the left hand? It's 10 note apart? Help....

I can only reach 10 note, white keys, cheating by pressing at the edge hehehe
10 key black notes are immpossible.

Teacher pls advise me..

Surprising that nobody has responded to your call as yet.
The apparent opening LH chord is in fact “rolled” ... the 3 notes F, C, A are played in quick sequence with the A on the beat ... like an arpeggio (harp-like playing of notes) with a 5(little finger) .3 (middle finger) .1 (thumb) fingering.

The structure of Melody in F by Rubinstein is rare in classical music ... in that the single-note melody line is consistently sandwiched between the top and bottom note patterns ... the unusual added direction lines to clarify the melody line between the two staves attempts to assist with the sight-reading.

The top RH eighth chords are rhythmic ... marking off the tempo ... and can be omitted while mastering the melody line and LH role of rolled
and normal chords ... by so doing you will enjoy savouring the prominence of the well known melody ... once having sorted out the lower two note patterns you can try to add the top RH chords to capture the full impact of the Melody in F.

Hoping the explanation is of help.

Thank you so much, btb. I appreciate you inputs.
The rolled style... now i understand. just like the Humoresque, but it has the curly bar sign.. \:\)
Luckily, i pause for a while when i encounter this difficulty and seek for advise. Otherwise my LH bone might have grown 1" longer in width..

Melody in F is one of my dream song. Once i can play this, i'll reward myself by buy a 2nd hand grand ... hehehe

I hope I am not speaking heresy here, but I would recommend steering clear of pieces with incessant demands for tenth chords.

Rolling chords is a work-around. For a piece with a few tenths, no problem.

But for pieces with numerous tenths, just move on. Why single out pieces to play for which you are not well suited?

scoopycar,

Why don't you find a piano teacher ?
It makes the learning process so much easier. If you learn it the wrong way, then it is going to be hard for you to undo the error or bad habits later.

If you don't mind, we could meet up once a while to exchange views on piano playing.

I am currently looking for an experienced teacher to teach me those difficult pieces. My previous teacher was good with playing by ear but lack the knowledge in classical music.

Your handspan sounds similar to mine. If you can play white key tenths by grabbing the ends of the keys (like me) you should be able to play at least the black key tenths Bb to Db and Eb to Gb and possibly white to black key minor tenths if you can bend the last knuckle of the fifth finger slightly.

Rolling the chords in Rubinstein's Melody in F is definitely a work around. When I play this piece I play the top note of the left hand chords with my right hand. This works with only a few exceptions which happily fall either at the high point of the phrase or at the end, thus making rolling the chords less obtrusive. Of course this means jumping the right hand around quite a bit more as well as paying careful attention to voicing the melody.
