I'm wondering from the other piano teachers out there what you have done when you have to take a break from teaching for starting a family? What is the max. amount of time you think parents/students will agree to as you are caring for your new baby? Should I get a replacement teacher for that time period? I'm worried that I will loose some of my students, but also want to take the time to care for my new infant (when he/she comes). Are parents and students generally understanding of this circumstance? What are your thoughts. Thanks!

ah...this is something I called a real tough life choice.

I don't think most of the students will choose to stay, even if you said it will be a 6 month break....or I think for new born, you probably need a year to get everything settled.

You may have some family decide to wait till you get things all sorted out, but my guess will be most of them won't wait that long.

I don't have a personal experience on that, but you really don't have a choice if baby is on the way.

However, if you can have someone teach them for a year as a replacement and if she would agree to hand back your students when you are ready to come back, that may work out, but I don't know if you teach independently or at a school....either way, not so sure what will turn out exactly in the end.

Good luck to you on that one.

Thanks for your reply. Decent advice, though I was only planning to take off 3 months at most. One of the great things about this profession is the flexibility, meaning I could teach in the afternoons and have mornings with the little one. I think 3 months is reasonable for people to wait, don't you? After all, it will most likely be Nov., Dec. and Jan which has time off in the middle anyways. Anybody else have thoughts on this situation?

Hi there,
Congratulations!!!

I have had two kids since becoming a teacher. When I had my first baby (almost 7 years ago) I took 3 weeks off and taught with the baby until he turned 3 months. Then I got a sitter to come while I taught. It was all very stressful, but I only lost one student.

I had another baby 9-months ago. I took a month off this time, but did the same thing as with my first. This baby is much easier, and so all is much less stressful. Some of my students babysit while I teach, and they love it.

I have not lost any students with this baby, and when she gets "animated" I tell the story of famed teacher Adele Marcus distracting students by banging pots and pans. My daughter is much quieter than banging pots and pans.

I hope this helps.

Good luck,
pianita
