Does anyone know of any good piano magazines for piano students?

Piano explorer is a fabulous magazine for piano students. You can find it at

With a subscription to Clavier, you can purchase the piano explorer for about 40 cents an issue! Quite a bargain, and a great publication.

It has history, music, games, contests, trivia, etc. all for the young student. It truly is a wonderful addition to any studio.

My students have really enjoyed it over the years.

But it's much more expensive than "Piano Explorer". I'll try the latter for a year since it's so inexpensive, it seems more suitable for kids and beginner too by looking at the highlights.

Me too. I have been a subscriber of "The Pianist" for quite a few years. Another one of extremely high calibre is Piano International (Bi-monthly) for which I have been a subscriber since issue #1. Highly recommended.

Are you collecting all the piano magazines? Can you compare "The Pianist" and "Piano Internatioal", how different are they? What about the price?

Yikes! That's $50 for us Americans... about $8 per magazine.

I'd love to subscribe, though, if it weren't so expensive. Must be all of the scores and the CD that raises the cost.

The magazine "Etude" has not been printed for many years.

During its heyday it was very popular.

Our local antique mall has a couple of stalls with many back issues of "Etude." They are perhaps $1 or $2 each.

I have really enjoyed them. They have articles for piano students, as well as interesting biographical articles about the great composers.

Each issue has about 20 pp. of playable pieces in the back -- and several of these will always be very easy -- Grade 1 or Grade 2.

As it say, you can't subscribe. But if you find them for sale at a flea market, antique mall, or garage sale, you might consider picking up one or two.

The only interesting piano magazine I have found is the one mentioned by CuriousMom which is Pianist. It's overpriced though, I guess, because it's published in England and contains a CD. I think there should be an option to subscribe without the CD for a quarter of the price, and maybe open an office in the US so that the print copy doesn't have to be shipped "across the pond."

Also, piano magazines are seriously lacking the visceral experience of learning about pianos. Automobile magazines, in contrast, do give you some inkling of the whole gritty nature of driving, of experiencing particular cars -- perhaps not quite as good as actually visiting the dealer mind you, but still, there is quite a bit conveyed on those two-dimensional pages that is somewhat immersive about the automobile experience, on a model-by-model basis. I cannot find that with piano magazines I have seen. I would like to find a magazine that has an article on, say, a Grotrian 192, that is almost as good as finding one at a piano store and actually playing it. Pianist doesn't even attempt to try to relay to us what "driving" a particular piano is like. Why not? We should be getting "reviews" of each make and model, just like the car mags.

I get both Pianist and Keyboard.

Pianist is expensive ($49 USD for 12 months which is 6 issues through Amazon.com) made in the UK and caters more to classical instruments and music. Part of the reason it is expensive is that it comes with a CD that has all the music and exercises from this month's issue. The last issue I received (August) came with a CD that had 37 tracks with 45 minutes of music.

Keyboard http://www.keyboardmag.com/ is less expensive ($21.95 USD for 12 months which is 12 issues through Amazon.com) and caters more to digital instuments and pop music, although there is a Steinway ad in this month.

I enjoy both.

so if you could subscribe to only one magazine, which would you subscribe to? (not worried about my students.. just me)

Probably the "Clavier" followed by Piano International Piano. The latter is quite expensive, $10 per issue. I look at it as part of my cost for music education.
