What do other teachers do about this one? When i first started teaching, I would spend $5.00 to $7.00 per students for nice things -- certificates to ice cream places, light-up pens, ornaments. However, only a few of the kids seemed to appreciate the gift, so I cut way back. Now, I go to the dollar store and buy bags of candy. I fill up small Christmas bags with a mixture, and let the students pick out their bag. It's a big hit with kids up to about 14 years old, and very cheap. For my older or adult students, I buy a nice ornament on sale somewhere for $3.00 - $4.00.

There is a candy store locally that makes their own LARGE candy canes. I stocked up on some, displayed them for fun, and then the week before christmas, the students could choose one to take home.

I like the idea of ornaments as well. They live on forever. I still remember students from years ago each christmas that I decorate the tree and open the delightful ornaments from them.

A quick personal ornament would be to buy a box and glitter their name or a musical symbol, display on a white 'sprig' small tree in Dec, and again they would get to choose an ornament to take home. Have pretty tissue paper and bow to wrap them in.

Another idea? Buy their holiday piano book for them.

It' the thought that counts!

"Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and life to everything."

My piano teacher (that I had some years ago) used to give us a special piece of sheet music and sign it with her name for Christmas. ie. Merry Christmas from Mrs. Williams Dec. 1960 or whatever. It was always something especially light and fun that we wouldn't normally be assigned. I loved it and still have some of them.

Have you ever been to Smilemakers? ( www.smilemakers.com ). Check out their Christmas Toys section. You can buy little toys and trinkets there, like Snowman activity sets and Snowflake stamps and Candy cane bubble necklaces. They're sold in packs of 24 (or more), so you can get several sets and combine to make grab bags.
