Hi all,
I hope I'm in the right place. I just downloaded 'Audacity' so that I can record using my laptop. I'd like some suggestions as to the best mic I can use (at different price ranges). I have a pre-amp, but prefer not to use it in order to simplify the process. I appreciate any help you can give. Walt

Rhode microphone made in Australia are pretty good. There is a stereo version that does a good job for about 400$.

What type of interface are you using?

I want to plug diectly into the mic input of an HP Laptop (Win XP, Pentium 4), but I have a Eurorack UB802 Mixer/Pre-amp.

If you want a more professional recording, I would suggest not to plug a microphone directly to the computer but to use a pre amp with balanced XLR input.

The best mic for recording piano that doesnt require external power source or for you to sell your house to be able to afford it is the Shure SM57. I have a pair, which i can place right inside the piano pointing at the strings. The sounds is rich, powerful and doesnt distort at all, even when I play Rachmaninoff.
