#972204 - 04/09/08 04:55 PM sonata question...

so i've been trying to figure this out for a while now, but am not getting the total picture hehe...any help would be appreciated...

so i've been reading up on sonata form and trying to identify it in the peices i'm playing but i'm a little confused...

a typical sonata has 3-4 movements let's look at a very straight forward one...Mozart's Sonata In C - K545

three movements...

I. Allegro
II. Andante
III. Rondo

looking at the explainations for sonata...there are some basic parts...

Introduction (Optional)
Exposition
Development
Recapitulation
Coda (Optional)

does each individual section have all of these elements or do the different movements correspond to the different parts of sonata form? i'm assuming the last movement has a rondo form, but am just looking for a little clarity...perhaps sonata form is usually just used in the 1st movement and other forms are used in other movements such as rondo form?

thanks in advance...

Hi Zwischenzug,
the elements you describe are typical of the first movement of a classic sonata (as you already assumed).
The second movement uses the form of song or variations, the third is a rondo.

Also be aware that Mozart K.545 is quite unusual in that the recapitulation is in the wrong key. It's one of the very few sonatas that has the return of the first theme in the subdominant.
