mollyp, I am truly sorry to hear of your problems. But the good news is your love affair with the piano has started, so you will be able to progress from here somehow or other. At least you have 14 months' background to build on now.
The first thing is to get a piano, of course. That depends on money! If you aren't able to buy one, see if you can get one nearly free. So long as the keys work and it is in tune (or can be tuned) it will be better than nothing in the meanwhile. Another alternative would be to buy a digital piano with weighted keys - a Casio Privia is a good buy, for example. If you can afford a better piano of course, then you just need to make an informed choice. Perhaps you could enlist the help of a local piano tuner who would later work for you?
The teacher problem can be solved later. Just don't rush into anything on that front.
Very best of luck!

Hi Molly,
I'm sorry to hear you've lost your teacher and your piano almost at a stroke. If you can't afford a new piano, try looking for a used one. As Maryrose says, if you look around you can sometimes have some very good luck. My niece was able to pick up an upright free that was being thrown out at the YWCA. Or if not, a digital would certainly keep you playing until you can find an acoustic that suits your budget.
As for the teacher, don't panic and take your time finding another one. It's important to find a teacher who's a good fit if you're going to enjoy your time at the piano. I'm still searching and I'm teaching myself in the meantime.
Good luck,
Donna

hmmm. I was pretty rough on some teachers in my day. One I think ended up in AA but I don't think I ever got one to RETIRE. My hats off to you: that's a great accomplishment. You didn't mention if the piano going away was because of a subpoena issued by your neighbors and the SPCA

Oh dear, double whammy Still on the positive side, you have 14 months experience and know you love piano -- so you have a head start on many of us who start out here. You can survive without a teacher -- you can teach yourself, and some of us are doing that on a permanent basis. But you can't survive without a piano, so that has to be your first priority Be careful with a free or nearly free piano -- often they are priced that way because passing it on to you is cheaper than taking it to the dump

Yamaha and Kawai are both well respected brands. I don't know whether you are looking for an upright, a digital (electronic), or a grand. Good uprights and digitals should be very do-able on your budget. A (used) grand might also be possible. I suggest check out the Piano forum -- they have lots of discussions on this topic.

I'm really sorry that you lost teacher and piano at the same time! Western Australia - are you in a city or live rather isolated?
As to pianos, I'd prefer an acoustic piano, unless there's a neighbour/noise problem, but any functioning/tuned piano is better than none. Take your time to check out a few pianos, play on them, see what you'll be happy with.
Regarding teacher, I value mine so much, especially for all advice I get once I think I play a piece rather well, but teacher is second to piano. With a background of 14 months' teaching you can go ahead alone for a while

hi yes i am inner city so should be able to find a teacher closeby- i just really liked mine.never mind. my pianos gone but have now organised a hire which hasnt yet arrived but hopefully soon. also the same man is having a kawai trucked from overeast for me to look at.i dont have much info yet but he recommends the dealer he has got it from-so with a bit of luck it may be just what i am looking for.(i particularly wanted walnut which are apparently hard to come by in aust.) so wish me luck.
