I found a used piano about 45 minutes from me. I haven't been to look at it yet but the family told me over the phone that it is a Samick, Conover Cable. It is 6 years old, original owners. She plays it fairly often and has it tuned once or twice a year. It is 43 inches tall. She is asking $1,600 for it. I don't know much about pianos. I'm on my way over to get Larry Fine's book from the library right now. I know this piano has been on Craigs list for about 3 weeks, so no one has jumped on it. Is it worth me driving to look at it, or not worth it? Thanks! Lisa

It may be a good deal, however you should hire a local technician to look at the piano, it may cost you 100 bucks or so, but it is monet well spent. Because it is summer, you could possibly get a better deal as the market for pianos is not "hot" when the whether is.

craigslist baltimore had a Baldwin in Millersville for $650. Have you seen any Baldwins near you?

P.S. or wash dc has a Baldwin 243 E upright for $1750 in Bowie. There is another Baldwin upright in Rockville for $1800.

The Conover Cable was a private line made for the now bankrupt Brooks-Mays chain.

It WAS made by Samick, but I'm not sure as to its specs, as Samick will build pianos to their client's specs if ourderd in quantity, which the Conover Cable was.

Baltimore is very near me. I just looked and saw several Baldwins. I just e-mailed them to see how old they are and get more info.

Conover Cable was not necessarily just for Brook Mays. Samick distributes Conover Cable in many markets. CC's are made in their factory in Indonesia. Similar to Remingtons, Kohler & Cambels lower end. Not bad pianos. Have it checked out by tech. Offer $1050 cash and see what happens.

Craigen's advice sounds good, especially since the Baldwins are likely to be much older than the Conover Cable.

I was just thinking if you're looking at around $1600, there is a chance you'd find another brand closer to you that is a little taller and whose tone may be more pleasing...and you might be able to bargain it down...
