In lead sheet music I am seeing a chord notation I am not familiar with. For example the Bb chord with a triangle. What does the triangle indicate?

While we are at it --- this same piece has a Db07, (small 0). That's another one I have not run across before.

Thanks for you help.

Malcolm

Hi Malcolm,

I had to look this one up.

CΔ means Major Seventh Chord. This would be C E G B

C7 would be Dominant Seventh Chord. This would be C E G Bb

Hope this helps.
Rich

The way I understand it, the triangle means the chord is a Major 7th, so instead of saying BbMaj7, they put Bb (triangle).

Opps. Forgot the small o - that means diminished - with a line through it means 1/2 dim.

Also, for a major or minor 7th chord, you can many times leave out the 5th, which would be F for a Bb major 7th, so for a Bb major 7th you could get by with playing Bb D A

btw, in case you do not already know, if you are playing from lead sheets that are using triangles to indicate a major chord, they may also use dashes to indicate a minor chord (especially if they are hand written). For example D-7 would be a D minor 7th
