Well, it seems to me that there is an overabundance of IT and medical professionals on the forum. Are folks with these professions more drawn to the piano than the average Joe and Joan?

Dennis, isn't the real question is what draws them (us) to this forum? smile

l's dad is an engineer, a husband and father of one.

I practice the piano every day I can for as long as I can.

When I was working, people would ask what I did and I never could adequately explain and it always felt frustrating when I tried, so mostly I stopped trying. But I'm not doing that anymore anyway, so it doesn't matter. I think I may currently be "retired", whatever that means.

I'm a full time Pharmacist of 35 yo, with an horrible working schedule: 9:00-13:30 and 16:30-20:00
I live alone, no husband, no kids, no dogs, no cats, no fishes, had a plant but it died.

I try to practice 1 to 1,5 hours every day, up to 3 during weekends, and take lessons twice a week: 1 hour music theory on Tuesdays and 1 hour piano on Thursdays.
Photography is other of my passions and I enjoy going out for the week-end with my photo camera in one hand and a map in the other, hunting for the perfect pic wherever a train or plane may take me. (Not very far away actually, considering how short weekends are!)

For the last 5 years I've been cooperating as a moderator and also writting manuals for a webpage dedicated to video edditing and digital photography. It’s not in English, but just in case somebody’s feeling curious: www.videoedicion.org

I think that perhaps of all the people who play the piano, those here are simply more comfortable using a computer based forum...

I'm sure you didn't mean it but it looks like you're saying that somebody who is not an IT or medical professional is an "average Joe and Joan"!

57 year old Technical Author and Linguistics Proof Reader for a large aircraft manufacturer in Hamburg ( you can guess which one!). Now working part-time (3 days/week), so I have more time to practice, in theory!

Moved to Germany approx three years ago to be with the love of my life. We have two dogs and have recently bought a nice house on the Baltic sea coast which is big enough for the grand piano I've promised myself, one day soon.

My practice schedule is disorganised - sometimes 2 hrs a day, sometimes 1/2 hour, sometimes not at all. I intend to become more disciplined smile

I'm in the wonderful world of retirement and as with everything else, I play or practice whenever I feel like it.

It's interesting that there is such a variety of practice schedules. I lack discipline so I put in one hour per day. If I had the flexible schedule many of you use (2 hrs one day, 1/2 hr. the next), I'd end up dwindling down to not practicing. Sometimes that hour expands to more. But I need that consistent routine. I have a passion for piano but still lack discipline.

I'm impressed by all you above, who lead such full lives but manage to find the time for piano.

Neurosurgeon in-training. 4 years down, a couple more years to go...I practice whenever possible. Sometimes nothing for a couple days/weeks then make up the difference when I can. This year I am out of the hospital for lab research so my clinical duties are slightly lighter and I am trying to make the most of it. I started classes back when I was in medical school and had to stop for a few years, just recently went back to it. It will take me a while but I figure I have my entire life to finish learning.

No, I didn't mean to imply that those of us who are not in those professions are lesser in any way. I am one of those "average Joes" after all. I was simply pondering whether people in those occupations were more likely to play piano than were those in other lines of work.

46 years old, digital microscopy/imaging tech at a university who teaches and consults on research methods and course development.

Father of two, husband of one. wink

Practises two or three times a day from 5 to 60 minutes. I try to total at least 30 min a day, 1 hour on weekends.

I like sunsets and long walks and am searching for a generous fairy godmother who likes music and is willing to magically anoint ten clumsy fingers with a cocktail of Otis Spann and Dr. John with a touch of Art Tatum. :p

I just retired as a mental health professional. Have been playing for six years and continue to struggle to play well. But I still love it. Retirement has been very busy for me so I have been playing only an hour a day as I always have even when I was working. Very Sad. Continue to have fantasies of playing for hours. Happy

Inspiration is what draws me to this forum.

As another IT person, my question is how to get out of IT and still have a decent paycheck.

As for practice, I get about 1.5 hours in on weekdays, in two 45 minute sessions. On weekend days, I usually get less than an hour each.

Anyone notice an abundance of parrots on this thread?
switch to patchwork/quilting and you are flooded with cats smile

I'm a journalist, currently doing PR for a TV station.
2 parrots ... o.k. - they are parakeets, but parrots from a zoological point of view nevertheless.
I practice an average of about 2 hrs a day, more on weekends or when my neighbour is away, less when I come home very tired.

My wife and I are in our early 40's and retired full time last year.

These days, I guess I would be considered white trash as my business attire consists of sweat pants and a -t-shirt.

I've been known to wake up at the crack of noon only to start the day by preparing dinner.

I check the financial news several times per day which only makes me start talking like a sailor for hours on end.

This summer, we will be starting on building a new ranch in Wickenburg Arizona which usually takes 2 years to complete. I have actually been spending the last month and a half excavating the property with my backhoe and grade tractor removing trees, bushes as well as leveling out the land for arenas and a house pad.

Fortunately, we were able to sell off some of our prime real estate during the peak a few years ago and that is what we live off of.

Okay, I've gotta say up front that I've got a parrot. smile She's a 10-year-old Senegal and just loves to yak (like her Mom). She also likes to sit on my shoulder and mutter while I practice piano. She loves the blues.

I'm an immigration paralegal in a large law firm. Most of what I do involves obtaining work visas for skilled professionals (many of them in IT or clinical research positions). I'm divorced, no kids, and my 89-year old mother lives with me. I keep an eye on her since she had a couple of small strokes about five years ago and could no longer live on her own. She's a great Mom.

I try to practice for at least 30 minutes every night after work. Often 45-60 minutes will pass before I realize how long I've been at it.

Pasta, I could use a visit from that fairy godmother, too. Otis Spann and Dr. John, indeed!

Music washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.
