After working up Exercise 7, taking a break from Hanon, then coming back and recording Exercise 7, I think I'm ready to move on to Exercise 8.

This next exercise really plays to my weakness - runs of notes in the left hand that use fingers 2-3-4-5 in a non-sequential order. The 1-2-4-5-3-2-4-3 runs in the second half of the exercise are giving me fits right now. Real tough to play at any tempo without flubbing the left hand. No problem in the right hand though (I am right-handed).

Hopefully it will get easier as the week wears on... smile

Hi,

please check the list to see that you've not been shortchanged in exercises completed.

I've not yet looked at ex 8, ex 5 and 7 are still on my boilerplate but very close to being right, so, hopefully I'll get back on track soon!

I've completed exercise 8. I've been working hard to get ahead because I'm going to be away from the piano for 10 days starting this Friday. Good luck to all on ex 8!

got it Agent - nice work!

Well my motivation is sky high now that I've got 5 and 7 recorded, had a brief look at eight and it doesn't look so bad but i'm sure it will be!

10 days C7 Player - I'm not sure i'd survive being away from a piano such as your's for so long! ( it is one of my dream piano's BTW!)

Okay, I have completed #8, finally. This was a toughie, but I played it three times tonite w/ no glitches. However, I was not real speedy -- maybe 70? but I was, out of necessity, working on accuracy. Much easier ascending than descending (those left 4th and 5th fingers really get a work out!).

I am still hanging in w/ the Hanon die hards! The extra week did certainly help.

Struggling to keep up. I posted my recording for Ex 7. It's not perfect but I need to start working on Ex 8 before I fall too far behind. Thanks to this group there is peer pressure to keep up with the exercises.

Hi,

You can mark me as completed for #8! I did it right at 40, and did it almost right at 50.

I just completed Hanon book 1. Will there be a book 2 challenge beginning soon?

Man #8 is a bear!

Can I make a suggestion? stephenc, would it be too much trouble to post the links to the previous exercises? Similar to how they do it with the rehearsals.

Just to make sure: at what point do we call an exercise "completed"? I'm working on 9 now, and am only doing 1 thru 4 as run-throughs. I can't play them at the posted speed in the book yet, so does that make them incomplete?

Hi susi,

Although it's called the Hanon challenge, this isn't a competition so there's no proof or speed requirement. When you feel you've gotten whatever benefit you can get from an exercise at a given point in time then call it done and move on. I'm sure all of us will play them better and/or faster should we continue to revisit them in the future but whether or not you do that is completely up to you.

I think it's the case for all the exercises that after learning them and playing them for a week there is a point of diminishing returns where continued practice at that time doesn't yield much benefit, i.e., if you can play an exercise well at MM 60 continuing to pound on it to try to get to MM 100 yields little benefit. However, I do think continuing to play them on a regular basis does yield results.

Bottom line: it's your call when you think you've "completed" an exercise.

Great post Greg! I didn't think of it that way but you're right. One of the benefits of this group is it keep us moving along and prevents us from becoming stuck trying to perfect something. Being a Type A myself I am guilty of this on occasion wink

Greg, thank you for that. I will call 1 thru 4 complete, then, because I'm not including them in my warm-up anymore, only as run-through's for reinforcement. I'll look at 5 and 6 again today; 7,8, and 9 definitely need more work.

Whew!
