The 1st Mazurka Marathon is supposed to go live March 1, 2008 (Chopin's 198th birthday). The 2nd is scheduled for 10/17/08 (Chopin's death day) and the 3rd for March 1, 2009. Please check in and let us know how you're doing, what you're doing. Shuffling selections to a later recital is OK just so we eventually have them all covered. Posting instructions will be posted later (probably much later) as soon as MaryRose and I get our act together.

BTW I suggested that Mazurka Marathon name as a joke. It stuck and if you can come up with a better one please suggest it.
Thanks,
Joe

Here's The List as of 3/1/08.

[No number after the person's name indicates the mazurka is chosen for the 1st "Recital" on March 1, 2008. A number (2) and/or (3) indicates that mazurka has been chosen for the second and third recital. October 17, 2008 and March 1, 2009 (respectively).]

I'm still in with 33.3- not ready, though! My teacher is going to be helping me with it from here on, so it should improve between now and then.

"Mazurka Marathon" is a perfect name!

Whoops! I forgot to start my piece!

I'll have it by March, if I can find time.

You can always move it to the second or third recital. Your audition pieces are more important.

I'm not part of this marathon. But I can play 67/4 and I'm making fast progress on 6/2. It's ironic that one person is working on the same two mazurkas I am! Secondo, if you read this, just know that you have a back up if you get overwhelmed! Enjoy learning these beautiful pieces. =)

I'm closing in on 30/1 and looking forward to the Mazurka Marathon - nothing wrong with that name -

I'm good to go with the 17/4 but barely touched the 7/1. Hopefully I'll have it ready for the next.

Thanks for posting this--I hadn't started yet, but fortunately I have an easy one. It's very beautiful, and I'm really enjoying working on it.

I haven't yet started 33/1 and it's fine that it's scheduled for 1 March 2009. I have started on 33/4 and had planned to have that ready by 1 March 2008 but will not be comfortable to present it then. There've been quite a few other pieces my teachers wanted as a priority, and it being my first and a very long mazurka ...

I still want to have one of the pieces ready for 1 March 2008 - 7/5. It's quite a shorty, and I have it memorized and can play it through. Will present it to my teacher on Thursday to get first comments and guidelines, and I am quite confident that I'll manage it by the end of February.

I am so disappointed that I will not be able to participate in the Mazurka marathon,as my back and leg have been acting up again, making it hard for me to sit at the piano for any length of time.

The problem started some months ago, then the pain disappeared for several months, only to come back again. First I was told that I had a pulled leg tendon, another doctor said it was a pulled or torn leg muscle, and the third doctor said it was a problem with my back, and that the pain was radiating down to the leg.

Hopefully someone else will be able to play the Mazurkas I signed up for.

This is a real disappointment. The good news is that at least this week the pain has eased up, and I hope to get back to the piano again. ButI don't want to rush it, and have been limiting my practice to about 1/2 hour at a time. Gaby Tu

I'm pulling out after having worked on the wrong Mazurka! I've been learning 7.1 instead of 67.3  Don't know how I got confused, except for the fact that they're both in my 'Introduction to chopin' book!

7.1 is already spoken for, by Peyton and Yuri (my backup) is welcome to take over 67.3 if he/she wants to \:\)

cruiser: \:\( Maybe somebody else can come up with a suggestion for you. I can't think of what you could do.

I need some advice as I'm flying without a teacher. On 17/2, the Urtext edition has no pedal markings in the second statement of the theme (last page). Recordings I have heard use pedal just as at the begining. Is it understood that the pedal markings are omitted because the pedalling should be the same?

Also, (and I apologize if this has been discussed elsewhere) what recordings of the Mazurkas do people recommend? I have 17/1-4 by Leif Ove Andsnes. He seems to take the tempo on 17/2 slower than marked in my edition (which would be fine with me!)

Any suggestions are more than welcome. I have the 2nd page memorized, which is good, because much of the first page is the same. Yay!

Frycek - are there still orphan Mazurkas? I'll adopt 7/2, 24/4, 50/1 if no one else wants them.

Rustyfingers - did you know that Chopin had a pet chimp? Its true! He got it when he worked for a while for the circus in Poland. Anyway, Chopin was always too lazy to put in his own pedal markings - "I've got better things to do" he would yawn to 'George' Sand. And so, desperate, his publishers trained the chimp - whose name was Bon Bon - to enter pedal markings when Frederic wasnt looking. Unfortunately the chimp only knew to put the marking in where the harmony was NOT changing - and he never repeated marking where a human could do it himself - or herself. And that's why you can pretty much pedal in whatever way makes the music expressive without forfeiting clarity of voices and line.

Hi Cornflake:

If you want to do these two pieces 67/4 and 6/2, because you are working on them, I can take 24/1 and 67/1 instead. Let me know. No problem. I don't have a piano until late Feb, so I could do 24/1 in the fall and 67/1 in March 2009.

Just a bit of an update. We've got a new domain (chopinforever.org) for this and as soon as MaryRose gets her photoshop to stop talking to her in Spanish (possibly channelling Freida Kalo) we'll be calling for submissions.

Done. You need to write a Chopin story involving maruzkas.

Not that it matters, but... will there be a new domain for every recital? I had thought the original Chopin Recital page (chopinrecital.org) was going to be the one which contained all the upcoming Chopin recitals, especially since it now has the title "The Inaugural Recital". I don't really know how this all works, I just thought we would be "adding" submissions to the original page. (??)

No, about a domain for every recital. MaryRose and I were left in limbo for quite awhile about what was to happen about the chopinrecital.org domain and since we didn't have access to it so we came up with our own. We've since been given access to the chopinrecital.org and are giving some thought about how to on integrate the two sites. Who knows, someday we may need both.

No, that is a community site. MaryRose, Frycek and I have logins to it. It is a home for Chopin enthusiasts.

Chopin was in Vegas for some well-deserved R and R - gambling, heavy drinking and girls, girls girls! - that's what the TB doctor ordered! George and Jane were off visiting the folks in London and Frederick arranged for the dog sitter to come in and check on the poodles. He also made arrangements for two of his beloved Erards - well, actually two of his LEAST beloved Erards - to be shipped to him in order to be converted - one into a water bed, the other into a piano-shaped hot tub. And yet the composer - despite the nightlife, gaming tables and showgirls - was plunged into the deepest ennui!

"Helas! While I am the toast of toute Paris my soul is not at rest! My piano students - the aristocratic ones - all they care about is caviar, champagne and their wretched tableaux vivantes! The prodigies who come to visit me play my music as if it were the dry exercises of Czerny. And the concert pianists care only about sterile virtuosic display! Nobody understands me OR my music!"

It was while plunged in these melancoly ruminations that the Erards were delivered. The workmen maneuvered the heavy boxes into the composer's room, Chopin tipped them, and threw himself on the swooning sofa. While languishing there suddenly he heard a soft tapping coming from the inside of the box. Chopin swept up one of the crowbars left behind by the workmen and wrenched the wooden box open. To his astonishment out stepped the nonagenarian Princessa di Villa d'Este, hungry, tired, but none the worse for wear!

"To what do I owe this charming but nevertheless completely unexpected visit!"

"Oh Master, a thousand pardons for disturbing your creative solitude, but I simply had to meet with you privately. All my life it has been my dream to play the piano, but after my childhood at the convent, and my marriage to the Prince I have been barred from fulfilling my dream. The Prince forbids all amusements beyond the simple tambourine - that musical instument of his glorious forebears! I have taken the liberty of sealing myself in this precious shipment in order to confer with you privately and to realize my dream - even if it is for only a few all-to-brief hours!"

The composer's romantic soul was deeply moved by this outburst of artistic yearning. Clearing the rest of the packaging from the Erard he set up a stool for the Princessa and dropped a copy of his newly-printed Marzukas Op 6 onto the music rest. At once the Princessa began to play, and while it was executed in a manner less than 'perfect' it awakened a sudden realization in the heart of the musical genius and tears of joys streamed from his radiant countenance!

"Mon Dieu - it is THIS which has been missing from the interpretation of my Mazurkas! Although executed in a manner flawed by dropped notes, uncertain phrasing, uneven tonality and incorrect notes - it is through the combination of emotional maturity and a naive insouciance that the true Spirit of Poland and it's people - with their yearnings for freedom and their deep spiritual sadness - it expressed! And so it seems that an adult who is also a beginner - THIS is the pianist who can truly play these works as they were meant to be played!"

Immediately Chopin took up his quill and re-edited the printed page to reflect the humble but deeply stiffing performance which had so moved him. It is not well known, but nevertheless true, that subsequent editors have ignored these markings and have presented the Mazurkas in their 'cleaned up' version - leaving the correct interpretation to be obscured by the dust of time - UNTIL NOW! when the Adult Beginner's Forum prepares itself to reveal that composer's true intentions!

We have the participants of the Piano World Adult Beginner's Forum to thank for restoring this body of work to it's original lustre.

We're working on it. MaryRose our artist has been having computer difficulties but I think they're straightened out. We should be sending out a request for submissions very soon.

All Mazurkathon participants: please be sure that your Mazurkas are as polished as possible this week! (Is that a pun? Polished - geddit?) Once you have a recording that you are satisfied with, then please upload it to a server such as Boxnet (or your own webspace if you have it - anything really). In a couple of days we will be asking you to send the url of your recording for us to make up the web page for next weekend. Chopin's birthday is one week from today.

And remember - enthusiasm is more important than perfection.

MaryRose

I have a Mazurka (op 41 Eminor) for you, it's uploaded. I need my time to concentrate on other things, so I'm afraid it's more enthusiastic than perfect and more Norwegian than
Polish(ed), but where to send it ?

Ragnhild, please can you send it backchannel to me? I think that's the best way. I will collate them all and put them on a website in time for the Big Day.

Looking forward to hearing all your mazurkas!

Hi Mary Rose!

Another "enthusiastic" performance waiting here too.

Reminds me of a code word my parents had for my ambitious projects which were well-intentioned but suffered in execution: "charming"

Should I PM you the link? Or wait for a more formal announcement?

Dear Rusty, and anyone else who might be reading this, please pm me your links to your mazurkas any time you can this week. So far I only have Ragnhild's and I have soooo enjoyed listening to it that I played it again and again for nearly an hour.

Schubertian, where have you been? ;\)

The Mazurka Marathon was last spring on the anniversary of Chopin's birth; a recital of Etudes is scheduled for October:

Take a look at the first post of this thread -

Frycek - under the urging of some insane inner demon - has scheduled THREE marathons during which all the mazurkas are to be presented - the second and third are Oct 17 2008 and March 1 2009 -

Mary-Rose and I were just discussing the possibility of moving the second Mazurkathon to March 1, '09 (from Oct. 17, '08) due to the fact that the Etude recital is already scheduled for Oct 17. Having the 2 Chopin recitals on the same day may be a bit much, and we were a little concerned that the Mazurkas would be overshadowed by the Etudes.

She thought it best to wait until others started asking, before putting the question out to the other participants. Mary-Rose: care to chime in? What do the rest of you think? Oct 17 or March 1?

my 2 cents: I think it would be a great idea to move it to March 1 for exactly the reason you state

whew!

OK with me, as the last Mazurkathon was rather sparsely attended, possibly because of it's temporal proximity to the ABF recital.

So, has an official decision been made to postpone this to March 1? Only a few of us weighed in recently; this may be a good time for a more complete roll call.
As for me, I can still be "in" for Oct 17 with 63.3, but will be happy to wait until March 1 if that's the consensus.

I can be ready for Oct 17 - but am certainly flexible. Would we then be aiming to have our third selection ready for March as well?

An official decision has been made to postpone the second Mazurka Marathon until March 2009 and the third to March 2010.
