I was fiddling with Microsoft Windows Media Encoder and managed to stream my webcam to the internet without any other hosts/apps/webspace/servers needed - the URL is my laptop which is streaming the video. The cam is pointing at my piano so you may catch me practicing... \:\)

The buffering goes up to anywhere from 5 to 35% then starts all over again. Never can get it to play.

(this thing is like watching traffic cams to figure out traffic conditions! :p )

wj3 - I was cooking a curry \:\) I've restarted it at a much lower bit rate as an experiment Rosanna. I hope to use it for broadcasting sailing events and a weather cam for the sailing club... Although teachers may be interested in using the method for concerts etc - because Skype/Yahoo etc is not needed - it's just a URL.

Cool. It's working!

And you *just* sat down this moment and are playing RIGHT NOW. This is so amazing! I feel like saying hi, coz I can see you, but you can't see me. It's weird... (feels like a peeping tom...) Do you think about the fact that there can be any number of PW members watching you while you play? It's kind of like the ultimate red dot...

I'm having a problem loading the page in Firefox - it does, however, work correctly on Internet Explorer. Perhaps that is something you could look in to.

You might want to look into your bitrate as well - the video keeps buffering, which I think is due to a problem on your end, i.e. low upload speed.

video looks fine to me

[edit: :this is becoming a "hybrid" video/chat.]

2nd edit: I hear the playing perfectly (Gorgeous Titanic theme :3hearts: ) BUT the video for some moments was still. And then the buffering resumes for a moment. So whatever bitrate you changed seems to affect things slightly.

the buffering is happening more often now, interrupting the stream.

The video is also still very often, but the sound doesn't stop (except when buffering interrupts. Which is not happening for the moment.)

edit: hehe. Now it feels like I am hanging out in your living room, listening to you noodle... Fun. But I really shouldn't sit at the computer any longer.

I never did get it to load at my office, but it worked for me at home. Way cool.

...And I gotta tell you the cute thing my son said when he came into the room and saw you playing on the screen: "Who is that guy? Beethoven? Mozart??" \:D

I can understand where he's coming from! I watched for a minute or two and LaValse plays fantastically, even just practicing! \:D

You are too kind 'Schome... Monica - Maybe it was the long hair (although it's short in comparison to what it used to be) - my daughter had a look online and said I looked like a "retro hippy".

Rosanna, you are welcome in my living room - I've been trying to get that piece done for the ABF rectials for about the last three of them but I just can't memorise it - as you probably saw... \:\)

Coolkid70 - thanks for the heads up re: Firefox. You're right - that will not be acceptable for sailing events (doesn't work here either using Firefox). Presently I've just embedded windows media player - I probably need to emded a player that works with all browsers...? Problem is, I don't really know what I'm doing...

Well, that was fun... I think I'll leave it going 'cos it was worse than the red dot...

I'm sure there are lots of ways of doing this but in case anybody elase wants to have a go, the MS route I went was:-

- Install IIS
- Install Windows Media Encoder
- Make sure your router/firewall will broadcast TCP on port 80 and 8080 (or whatever ports you choose for text/video).
- Add a default webpage in the default IIS website and embed a media player (Google how to do that - it's just a couple on lines of HTML).
- Start the media encoder and choose the live stream wizard and follow it through choosing port 8080 (for e.g.) for the video.
- If you have a dynamic IP address use a mapping service (loads out there) to map a URL to your IP address.
- Tell folk the URL.

I tried using a hosted webcam site first - but - you can imagine what all the other cams were broadcasting and I didn't feel comfortable with it. But this is better - the stream will work as long as your computer is on and you're broadcasting...

The Media Encoder software shows you a list of people connected - as IP addresses.

As my upload speed is very limited my best option would be to use a site such as ustream.tv where I think you send video to the server and then they redirect it back to any connected clients. Of course, I think I would rather have lower video quality and decent audio quality to the stream (unless I was playing badly.)

Seems to be working with Firefox now - it was me being dull. AnthonyB - now you tell me about ustream.tv - after all that faffing yesterday \:\)

Actually I think that'll be a good solution for sailing events - I'll give it a whirll; thanks for the link...

Hi LaValse,

What repairs are getting done this afternoon? Or is it just a tune-up?

Loving this webcast!

Euan/Triryche - yeah - I explained I was experimenting with video streaming and he was on the web and he said fine - he's adjusting my damper so that it's consistent when doing a slight half pedalling thing and then a normal tune...

Things are a bit slow in the office today. My boss is off, and all my work is complete. So I'm having a 'feet-on-the-desk' sort of Friday afternoon.

Which gives me a good chance to see the inner workings of a nice grand piano!

* disclaimer - if indeed my boss is a closet piano player and is on this site, that above message was just a joke.

LOL!

That reminds me of when my sister sent ten different puns to friends, with the hope that at least one of the puns would make them laugh.

We did something like this on Skype a while ago, but that was audio only. We got together with a few people and started playing songs. I also gave a "concert" on PalTalk once. Great fun! \:\)

Maybe we should do an online get-together with a bunch of folks from Piano World some day.

The video didn't load very well for me, though, and I'm on a pretty fast connection here.

It works great now here, but I'm at home now. And there's actually someone playing the piano. \:D

This is pretty cool, actually. It could become the next internet hype: the Piano Cam. Thousands of people all around the world checking in all day long in order to catch this mysterious dude playing the piano!

The feed doesn't work at all for me. That can likely be chalked up to me being in linux and using firefox. No activex controls for me. I tried pointing various media players at the media url but that didn't seem to work either. Oh well. \:\)

Um, if anybody caught the scene where my wife came in in her underwear asking me to tie her up in a plastic bag - I should explain that she's broken her arm and wanted a shower... honest...

"is the video on?"
"no of course not dear..."

Oops...

I gave up doing it DIY - but I found a family friendly free streaming service called http://camstreams.com based in the UK.

Seems to work fine and will be OK for sailing events. Has audio and a two-way messaging facility. I tried ustream.tv but it's not live - you have to upload "shows".

http://sailwave.camstreams.com

And embedded in a web page (useful)...

Obviously I want Scotland to win, but as Wales is my second-favourite of the 6, I'm not too bothered about the result.

(I just wish Katherine J is singing your anthem again; that's the real highlight of the 6 Nations for me ;\) )
