Additional Info: This sonata is an example of Mozart in his "Sturm und Drang" ("storm and stress") mode, and it has been described as orchestral in character. It is one of only two piano sonatas that he wrote in the minor key. It is also much harder than I ever would have thought it would be, but that's Mozart for you. I've been working on all three movements of the sonata for about a year, on and off, in addition to beginning to study it with a teacher about 7 years ago. (I am not taking lessons now.) I was of course striving for a completely clean, bell-like, musical performance. I didn't quite get there (surprise!) but it's been a very good piece for me to work on, and I've learned a lot from it.

Additional Info: I wish I'd had more time to work on the dynamics in this piece- they are, for the most part, absent, and get it a bit faster. And there are a few glaring mistakes, but this was the best take I got. I also decided to use the Kawai digital piano for a couple reasons- first, so you all could hear how it sounds, and second, it was easier to get a clean, extraneous noise free recording going directly from the digital into the computer.

Additional Info: A couple of weeks ago I was watching a "Showcase of Classics" special on PBS. A gentleman appeared, and accompanied by an orchestra and piano sang a stunningly beautiful song. It was 'angelic' to my ears and touched my heart. The name of the piece is "Morgen," by Richard Strauss.

I could find no piano music for this piece, but I did find a vocal score and from that I worked out my own chord progressions as well as I could.

I am, of course, not classically trained at all - most would say I am not trainable. My intent, however, is not to present this as a classical piece, but rather to paint the canvass with the brushes and strokes that I enjoy. I hope you enjoy it as well.

Additional Info: This piece captures something of the lushness of Spring. This performance won't win any awards but I hope it provides some enjoyment. I am aware of many flaws and the obvious mistakes. A more "perfect" take had to be abandoned as, unbeknownst to me at the time, the microphone fell off the piano midway through. Also, the session was interrupted by the need to stop and fix the D5 damper wire. By the time I played this one I was a bit flustered and just wanted to get it done. It's "okay" for an amateur I suppose, but I've played it better. The beginning is off a little, the melodic line is not as dominant as it should be, dynamics are not as stark as they ought to be, and there are a few timing slip-ups. Did not want to miss another recital, however, and a special thanks to Bob Muir for organizing it! I look forward to hearing the talent out there, and participating in the give-and-take of analysis of everyones' work afterward.
