Anyone else out there feel as if they're never going to progess out of the intermediate level? I've been here for years and years!

you don't realize you've left it until someone brings it to your attention.

I feel the same way. I can't imagine ever being "advanced."

Although there was a time not so long ago that I couldn't imagine being "intermediate" . . .

Cindy -- thinking there need to be more classes of "intermediate," like "just barely intermediate," "barely intermediate," "almost intermediate," "firmly intermediate" and so on

How does this happen? Also are there levels of "intermediateness"? I think there must be but for the life of me wouldn't know how to define it.

Cool, Cindy and Octavia were thinking the same thing at the same time.

My measure of advanced would be if I could pick up almost anything (within reason) and sight-read in reasonably well. I wonder if that will ever happen - although I do notice a good improvment since last spring.

You will be 10 years older, ten years from now, no matter what you do - so go for it!

I'm not sure that "heck" is a good description for where you are.

It's a journey. Some move more quickly than others. And yes, it's so unfair, but some will always be better than others, no matter how hard you practice to achieve parity.

If your only focus is on the end destination (advanced technique) no wonder you are impatient. Slow down and enjoy what you can do and marvel at the fact that (insert years here) years ago, you couldn't play at all! And if you aren't enjoying the pieces you play, maybe it's time to explore other types of music?

I like to think I'm very advanced as compared to the people who started this year, but much less advanced than almost every one else.

Exactly. The focus is on the journey, not the destination.

The pieces you are practicing are well into the RCM 'advanced' repertoire. So yes you are not an intermediate level player

Please excuse me. I have to go practice

It will happen someday. I can't explain it. I don't consider myself advanced either but according to my repetoire list I put on the pianist corner when I was in search of a Liszt piece for an audition, I am apparently considered an above average pianist.

how many years have you been playing? if it's around 10 years, maybe it is too long to still be at intermediate level, i guess. if it's only around 5 years, then i'm pretty sure you'd be out of it in couple of years. it will happen definitely, and one day you wake up, you would become advanced (as progress is always taking stairways)!

Intermediate heck from what I can tell leads to advanced heck mad . Once you arrive there's a boat load of difficult music waiting to kick your butt eek .

Why do we love it so 3hearts ?
