First post in a while... have been waiting for my piano to arrive. It arrived last week and I just have to share a picture of it! I also had my first lesson, which was a bit of a surprise. I was expecting my first lesson to be geared toward learning to read notes. It was not . I started with learning C major chord and several scales utilizing that chord. The teacher was highly recommended and he seems very passionate about the piano. Am I safe in assuming that there is more than one way to "skin a cat", and that this approach is no better or worse than another? Being as I am a newbie I am really not sure what to expect. Any thoughts? Fran :3hearts:

First thought: your piano is beautiful!!
There must be as many different ways to teach/learn to play the piano as there are different piano players. Perhaps your teacher felt that learning the 'geography' of the keyboard was necessary, before learning how to read the 'map' (music). That makes sense to me. Ultimately, you and your teacher will work together to find the best way for you to learn.
Congrats on your piano and best wishes for many years of piano playing bliss!

That's a beautiful first piano! What is the electric cord coming from the back of it?
Best wishes with your teacher - getting an overview of the next couple of months sounds like good advice so that you can set your expectations. However, from the initial plan where I started with my teacher 3 months ago changed over time to fit my strengths and weaknesses.
I'm both learning all the scales and circle of fifths, doing exercises (Hanon), and working on selected pieces that always seem over my head when assigned, but gradually get into my fingers.
Pandora Spocks, I love the "map" and "geography" analogy. I'm spending time each day with my eyes closed and feeling my way around the geography. And I've been working with flashcards to commit the map's legend to memory.
Many happy notes to all ♪♪♪
