This is the sound I associate with old Bluthners (with less distortion obviously)
Old Bluthner

And this is what I associate with the new:
new, and quite different

I appreciate both, but wish the former was still available. I wonder to what extent it's a question of voicing? If a new Bluthner had relatively soft cold pressed hammers, would it be similar to the old? It could be. I know that the approach to the aliquote has changed - the fouth string now being the same length as the other three, instead of half the length.

I have listen to all of McHeath's Youtube postings many times. They are all worth a listen. That old Bluthner is a great one. The piano player is pretty good as well.

Sure is a beautiful piano. Nothing like a good ol' Bluthner! smile

I wish my relatives could play musical instruments too! My grandpa plays woodwinds and sax (was pro clarinetist), and piano very well, but it has been many years since he seriously played. He has this song in his head that he loves to play, and I need to get it written down. Its such a fantastic and heartwarming piece. smile

Other than that, not a single person in my family plays an instrument. frown

actually bluthner's tone is not one of my top favorites but i wanted to bring attention to the recordings. the chopin prelude no. 4 above is my favorite interpretation for the piece. while i have my preferences for different tones, when i hear a recordings i usually just hear great or mediocre performances and don't pay so much attention to the piano itself. i care much more about what piano i play but that's because i'm not that good!

The Bluthner is almost 130 years old.
The kid is 14 years old on this record.
