Hi. I'm new to the boards.
I am not a complete piano newbie as I played as a kid but I wasn't very good and can barely remember much. My 3 year old daughter just started lessons through her school and is enjoying them so we decided it's time to buy a piano. Space is a concern so it will have to be an upright. This piano is mainly for my daughter but my mom, who is an excellent pianist, will play it when she visits several times a year. In addition, I am toying with the idea of taking lessons again. I would like to get a piano that is nice enough that I won't need another unless it's a grand. So I need the board's expertise as I have no clue where to begin.
My other concerns are:
- we live in Honolulu so should I be concerned with humidity?
- the foyer is the only space I have for a piano. We have porcelain floors and extremely high ceilings. Will I need to get a rug? And what other things can I do to prep the space? Curtains are not possible.
- or I could possibly put a baby grand in front of the double doors in my living room but it would get direct sunlight in the morning and I would have to move it if I want to open the doors.
- my 18 mo old son is nicknamed "Bam Bam", for obvious reasons. What finish would be most durable and less susceptible to his attentions?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
