Hello I have a steinway 1949 model M grand piano that was my mothers and I want to sell it. How do I go about finding out how much it is worth before I contact a dealer

You could take a look at the e-copy of Piano Buyer for background information. It is here on the right sidebar.

Armed with that information, you could consider calling a piano tech, one without a conflict of interest, to appraise your piano. You could also contact Steinway experts. More than one opinion I believe would be safe.

Clark,

Don't know where you're at, location, as with most things, counts, but in the bay area you see all original M's retailing in the 15-20k range. Obviously, condition counts and they seem to want more for the wood finishes. I played an original '50 M the other day, walnut, seemingly perfect ivories, great player, 18k.

I've seen them on local craigslist at similar prices. What they actually go for is anybody's guess.

Check out New York Craigslist with lots of Steinways. The latest is a restored 1929 Model M.for $24,000
