Hi Everyone; Ok... looking to purchase a grand piano for my chorus room at school. Got a call from a local dealer who is willing to sell me a Kohler and Campbell KFM-700 6" 10" Millennium grand piano with trade in of my old yamaha upright for $10K. Is this too good to be true? Anyone know how the KFM-700 holds up? Again, looking for something that will take a daily beating! Have my eye on a used Baldwin L at another piano shop but not sure if I am allowed to by a used piano. State finance rules dictate I may have to purchase new. Waiting for clarification. Please let me know your thoughts. Still... a K and C 6' 10" grand for 10K? Hmmmmmm.....

Thanks for your input.

Hi, PianoL1… and welcome to the PW forums!

I don’t know a lot about piano pricing, other than my direct experiences and watching the piano for sale ads on eBay and Craigslist. However, having said that, I also looked at a new K&C KMF 700 last summer and was given a price of $10,500, with my trade-in (a 25 year old Japanese made 5’10” grand).

So, I’m not so sure your deal is a screaming great deal, but it is probably a decent deal. I did like the piano, but I was not overtaken and consumed by it. I ended up buying an older Yamaha C7 that I adore.

Hope this helps, and keep us informed!

It may seem difficult to pass up a very large piano at a very low price, but as a music teacher I would encourage you to play some smaller pianos, say 6', in the same price range and compare them to the 6'10 you are considering. If you don't find a 6' that appeals to you more, then you should purchase the instrument you are considering. IMHO, pianos like the Ritmüller 188 (6'2) have more depth and warmth than the KC 700. What counts is what you hear and feel.
