I just noticed something watching several piano concert videos made within the last few years - a couple of Martha Argerich and Garrick Ohlsson videos, specifically. The grand pianos being used ddid not have the make stencilled on the fallboard or on the side. Either that, or the names were obscured.

I remember watching the televised New York Philharmonic Young People's Concerts in the 60's and 70's, and the piano name was clearly visible on the fallboard. (Leonard Bernstein and Michael Tilson Thomas used a Baldwin grand when they were leading the concerts, for instance.) Nowadays the piano name is not visible, even though the camera is focused on the keyboard or on the side of the piano.

Has anyone else noticed this, and does anyone know why?

Most venues charge a fee for exposing the name on camera. Some pay, others don't.
